Details on arrival
Volunteers can join our Marine Awareness Project in Sodwana Bay throughout the year; however, arrivals and departures take place on specific scheduled days to ensure smooth logistics and a well-coordinated group experience.
Arrival days are the first and third Monday of each month, and departures also take place on Mondays, aligned with programme durations.
Participants must arrive via Richards Bay Airport (RCB) on the designated arrival day. To qualify for the included group transfer, flights must land no later than 13:00 (1:00pm). The transfer departs at approximately 13:30 (1:30pm) and travels to camp, which is about a 3.5+ hour drive. For safety reasons, no transfers are available for flights arriving after 13:00.
If your flight does not align with the scheduled arrival day or time, we can arrange alternative or private transfers at an additional cost, ensuring you can still reach the project safely and comfortably. You may also choose to arrive earlier and stay overnight in Richards Bay before joining the group transfer.
Departure is also based on a scheduled group transfer. On departure day (Monday), the transfer leaves camp between 05:30 and 06:00, aligning with flights departing from Richards Bay Airport from 11:30 onwards.
Please note that earlier departure transfers are not available. If your flight departs earlier than 11:30, you will need to leave camp the day before, stay overnight in Richards Bay, and arrange your own transfer to the airport.
Similarly, late departure transfers are not available. If you are departing on a different day, we can arrange alternative or private transfers at an additional cost to suit your travel plans.
Due to the remote location of Sodwana Bay and the long travel time, these structured transfer schedules help ensure safe and efficient travel for all participants, while also allowing the group to start and end the programme together.
We strongly recommend booking flights in line with these times. Our team is happy to assist with travel planning and can arrange any additional transfers needed to make your journey as smooth as possible.
