🌍 About the Program

The Zanzibar Medical Project offers a unique opportunity to volunteer in one of the hospitals in Stone Town, on this beautiful, historic island off the coast of Tanzania. Known for its laid-back tropical vibe, Zanzibar is a place rich in culture and challenges alike.

Like much of Tanzania, Zanzibar faces significant healthcare struggles despite being semi-autonomous. With a predominantly Muslim population (about 95%), issues such as early arranged marriages, teen pregnancies, HIV/AIDS stigma, and women’s health remain sensitive and complex topics. Hospitals often work with outdated equipment and limited resources, making every bit of help crucial.

As a volunteer, your role will be to support the medical staff in various departments. Depending on your experience—whether you’re a student, nurse, or doctor—your responsibilities will vary. Initially, you will work under close supervision, gradually earning trust and independence by demonstrating your skills and commitment. Many volunteers have taken on challenging tasks such as assisting in deliveries, taking blood samples, dressing wounds, and even helping with minor surgeries—experiences rarely available in their home countries.

Healthcare facilities in Zanzibar face ongoing challenges: limited and aging equipment, medication shortages, undertrained staff, and high patient volumes. Volunteers play a vital role in improving care quality and easing staff workloads. The hospitals aim to provide the best free medical care possible under these difficult circumstances.

The project collaborates with both government hospitals and smaller private clinics serving local communities. Qualified medical professionals wishing to practice must be certified by the Zanzibar Medical Council—a process that takes about two weeks and requires additional fees and documentation. Once certified, volunteers can stay for up to a year and contribute their specialized skills, including general practice, dentistry, and pharmacy work.

👩‍⚕️ Your Role

You will assist local healthcare teams with a variety of tasks, from HIV/AIDS testing and vaccinations to general ward care. Each day brings new challenges and learning opportunities, requiring adaptability and respect for local customs and procedures.

🧑‍🏫 Guidance and Supervision

Your experience will be supported by our dedicated local coordinator, who will help with your arrival, accommodation, and orientation. Hospital supervisors and staff will provide daily guidance and oversee your activities. Communication, patience, and respect for cultural differences are key to building trust and making your volunteer experience successful.

💵 Additional Costs

A compulsory weekly donation of $100 (paid in cash upon arrival) helps support the hospitals’ ability to supervise volunteers and coordinate work. This fee is not included in your program costs.

🎁 Project Needs

Donations of medical supplies are deeply appreciated but must meet strict criteria: safe, current models with a minimum one-year shelf life and economical running costs. Please consult your booking agent for a full list of needed supplies.

🏠 Accommodation & Community

You’ll likely volunteer alongside both local and international volunteers from all over the world, sharing accommodation that houses up to 16 volunteers.

🛡️ Safety and Cultural Respect

Zanzibar is a safe and welcoming destination but requires cultural sensitivity:

• Dress modestly outside beach areas, especially for women.

• Avoid collecting shells or buying them, as this harms coral reefs.

• Always ask permission before photographing people.

• Non-Muslims should not enter mosques.

• Be cautious with personal belongings and aware of your surroundings.

• Beware of overly friendly locals offering free or cheap services—they often expect something in return.

💰 Transparency: Where Does Your Money Go?

Your fees cover accommodation, staff salaries, transport, and a direct donation to the hospitals to help them stay operational. This funding supports local employment, including your coordinators, and helps the project make a lasting impact.

🌙 Volunteering During Ramadan

Ramadan is a sacred month for Muslims involving fasting from dawn to dusk, prayer, and reflection. Volunteers are not required to fast but should respect local customs by avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking in public during fasting hours and dressing modestly. Greeting locals with “Ramadan Kareem” and understanding the basics of Ramadan etiquette will enrich your experience.
