    About the Program

    This placement focuses on improving the health and nutrition of some of the most impoverished areas of Buenos Aires. Interns will be expected to raise awareness in the communities, to mothers, children and mothers to be about the importance of a balanced diet and the risks of stunted development for children who are malnourished. In this position it will be important to be able to conduct presentations that are informative in order to improve the lives of those living in the villas. Participants will be responsible for assisting staff members in evaluating the health and nutrition of children in the villas, up keep of materials needed for evaluations, as well as encouraging families to attend regular health checkups. 

    Your tasks

    As a volunteer in this program, you will gather data and study community and clinical health challenges, including both large-scale pandemics and rare illnesses. You may have the chance to observe surgeries and attend rounds with staff, as well as assisting with public health outreach and education. Gain insight into the field of international health, and build teamwork and collaboration abilities. This is an excellent opportunity for current or recent students who are committed to health education or professionals looking for a short term program.

    Through the volunteering experience, language abilities will improve tremendously and participants will be surprised how quickly they pick up on day-to-day conversation. In order to get a leg up at the start of the program, volunteers may choose to enroll in a short Spanish language course provided by Mente Argentina.

    A typical day for a volunteer includes some hours of volunteering paired with free Mente activities in order to get to know Buenos Aires and socialize with other participants.

    In the morning, the volunteer usually meets with the volunteer coordinator and their fellow volunteers and start the day together, organizing their activities and schedules. The work takes place in hospitals where volunteers can shadow and assist medical staff depending on their qualification, as well as schools and other public spaces where volunteers are raising awareness and informing the locals about measures of prevention, the importance of a healthy nutrition and many other topics. After traveling home to their apartments or host families, the volunteers can enjoy their free time and join the free Mente Argentina activities such as city tours, happy hours and meet ups.

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Airport Pickup at Ministro Pistarini Airport

    Our driver will pick up the volunteer at one of the two local airports, EZE or AEP. The driver will be informed about the arrival time and flight number and double check the arrival time. He will wait for the volunteer in the arrival area right customs with a sign with the volunteer's name. The driver will bring the volunteer to his accommodation and will be in contact with the local coordinators who will meet the volunteer upon arrival.

    Details on arrival

    The program is available during the whole year, starting every Monday. 
    The minimum stay for volunteering are 4 weeks but we recommend longer stays in order to get familiar with the organization and the tasks and improve the languages skills.
