    About the program

Volunteers play a vital role in supporting professional midwives in our community, rural clinics, and at the refugee camp in Ghana. Currently, Ghana is facing a shortage of midwives due to brain drain, highlighting the urgent need for volunteer support during pregnancy and after delivery.

Volunteers will assist during normal vaginal deliveries or C-sections when necessary or when requested by the patient. They will also help with the first bath for newborns, weighing the babies, and administering vaccinations. Additionally, volunteers will regularly check the health status of mothers and infants, providing the appropriate care.

Volunteers support the education of pregnant women, families, and communities about healthy pregnancies and navigating the various trimesters during antenatal sessions and community outreach programs. They also work with midwives to encourage breastfeeding, teaching mothers proper breastfeeding positions and how to overcome challenges related to breastfeeding.

Volunteers are requested to bring hospital scrubs and suitable footwear, as well as gloves and sanitizer, along with any other items that may assist them in their daily tasks. While it is not mandatory, it would be appreciated if volunteers could also bring basic medical tools and first aid supplies to support local communities, especially during outreach events.

Our projects allow volunteers to participate in additional activities outside of their initial commitment, should they be interested. This participation is voluntary and not required. We understand that this flexibility can provide valuable experience. For example, childcare volunteers may choose to volunteer at the hospital once a week to understand the healthcare system better, or medical volunteers may want to spend a day at a school to interact with children. These opportunities are entirely at the volunteers' discretion.

    Free-time activities

Volunteers have the opportunity to explore the 16 regions of Ghana over the weekend. Each region boasts its own unique culture and tourist attractions. It is advisable for volunteers to read more about Ghana’s tourist sites to better understand where their interests lie.

We assist volunteers in selecting tourist destinations, provide advice on safety measures and accommodations, and recommend tour guides if needed. There are various attractions to visit, such as a monkey sanctuary, a safari ride in Mole National Park, waterfalls, an open street market, and a museum.

During the weekdays, volunteers can visit shopping and market centers after their volunteer duties, before dinner. The SFLIG Volunteer House is located just 30 minutes from the beach at Kokrobite, where volunteers can relax or swim at several beaches and resorts after volunteering hours. They can also spend the weekend at one of the lovely beach houses, which offer numerous fun activities.

Additionally, the volunteer house is only 15 minutes away from the largest shopping mall in Ghana, West Hills Mall. The mall features many large grocery stores that stock a variety of foreign products, along with a movie theater, game centers, a pub, forex services, ATMs, and a wide selection of restaurants serving local, Chinese, Indian, and other continental cuisines.

Volunteers will be picked up upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra by an authorized SFLIG Volunteers representative.

Prior to arrival, volunteers are asked to share their flight details and a recent photo to help with easy identification. Our local representative will also share their contact details and photo in advance to ensure a secure and clear meeting point.

Both options offer a safe and supportive environment and allow volunteers to experience Ghanaian culture and community life.

Host families and accommodations are carefully selected and regularly reviewed to ensure they meet our standards for safety, hygiene, and comfort. Our team maintains regular contact to ensure volunteers feel supported throughout their stay.

    Our Commitment

We aim to create an experience where volunteers feel secure, welcomed, and fully supported, allowing them to focus on making meaningful impact and enjoying their time in Ghana

    Food & Beverages

Three meals per day are provided as part of the volunteer program to ensure volunteers feel comfortable, well supported, and able to focus on their work.

     Breakfast

Basic breakfast groceries are provided daily, allowing volunteers to prepare their own breakfast according to their preferences. Typical items include oats, eggs, bread, butter, peanut butter, tea, coffee, milk, and similar essentials. This flexible approach allows volunteers to eat at their own pace and according to personal dietary needs.

    Lunch

Lunch is usually light and refreshing, often consisting of fresh seasonal fruits such as bananas, oranges, watermelon, pineapple, and apples. This keeps meals healthy and suitable for the warm climate.

     Dinner

Dinner is a balanced mix of local Ghanaian and international-style meals. Common dishes may include rice, noodles, yam, potatoes, spaghetti, and other nutritious options. This gives volunteers the opportunity to experience local cuisine while still enjoying familiar foods.

     Weekends & Cultural Exchange

On weekends, basic food ingredients are provided so volunteers can prepare their own meals. Many volunteers enjoy cooking together, sharing recipes, and introducing foods from their home countries. This creates a fun cultural exchange experience and allows volunteers to enjoy meals they may be craving.

    Drinking Water

Safe drinking water is provided throughout the program.

    Details on arrival

Volunteers are free to arrive on any day of their choice, but we advise volunteers to arrive on Fridays or Saturdays for them to have some rest and settle in before volunteer duties start on Monday. (Volunteers are also allowed to determine when they want to start upon arrival). Volunteers can arrive at any time of the day, but arriving in the evenings means volunteers will have to spend a long time at the airport due to long queues because most flights arrive in the evening. Therefore, volunteers can look for flights that arrive mid-morning or early afternoon.

Our representative will pick up volunteers to the volunteer house.  Volunteers can extend their length of stay upon arrival.

This placement is available throughout the year. It runs as a school curricular and as an after-school program.
