    Our Nutrition & Community Assistance in Tanzania is designed to give passionate volunteers the opportunity to work closely with local communities and health providers in Arusha, while contributing to meaningful and sustainable impact.

    Malnutrition remains one of the biggest challenges affecting children and mothers in Tanzania:

    _High rates of child stunting and undernutrition

    _Iron deficiency among pregnant women

    _Limited access to nutrition education in rural communities

    _Without proper nutrition, children face long-term health risks, poor development, and reduced opportunities in life.

    Your Role as a Volunteer

    As a volunteer, you will:

    A typical day as a Nutrition & Community Health Volunteer with Gilys Children Foundation starts at 08:30 AM. You will begin with a short briefing with the local team to plan the day’s activities.

    In the morning, you may assist with community outreach visits, support nutrition assessments, or help educate families on healthy eating, hygiene, and child care practices. You might also work alongside local staff in clinics or community centers, observing and supporting ongoing health programs.

    Around midday, you will take a lunch break and have time to relax, reflect, or interact with fellow volunteers.
    In the afternoon, activities may include follow-up visits, preparing educational materials, participating in awareness campaigns, or assisting with children’s nutrition and wellbeing programs.
    The day usually finishes in the late afternoon, giving you free time to explore Arusha, experience local culture, or relax with other volunteers.
    Each day can be different depending on community needs, making your experience dynamic, meaningful, and impactful.

    You can choose to rest at the volunteer accommodation, socialize with other international volunteers, or enjoy the peaceful environment after a meaningful day of work.
    For those who love adventure, free time can be used to explore nearby attractions such as local markets, cultural villages, coffee plantations, and stunning natural landscapes around Mount Meru.
    Weekend trips can also be arranged to world-famous destinations including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park, offering unforgettable safari experiences.
    This balance of meaningful volunteer work and cultural exploration makes your stay both impactful and memorable.

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Airport Pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport

    Airport pickup is included upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). 

    A team member from Gilys Children Foundation will meet you at the airport and transfer you safely to your accommodation in Arusha.

    Accommodation

    Volunteers with Gilys Children Foundation are provided with safe, clean, and comfortable accommodation in Arusha throughout their stay.

    You will stay in a shared volunteer house or hostel located in a peaceful and secure neighborhood, offering a friendly and social environment with other international volunteers.
    The accommodation includes comfortable bedrooms, shared bathrooms with hot showers, Wi-Fi access, and common areas where volunteers can relax, socialize, and share experiences after their daily activities.
    Meals are provided daily (breakfast and dinner), prepared by a local cook, giving you a taste of local Tanzanian cuisine while ensuring your dietary needs are met.
    The house is secured with 24-hour security, and our local team is always available to support you and ensure you feel safe and at home during your entire stay.
    Living in this environment allows you to experience local culture while enjoying comfort, safety, and community living with fellow volunteers.

    Food & Beverages

    Volunteers with Gilys Children Foundation are provided with daily meals during their stay in Arusha, ensuring comfort, convenience, and a taste of local culture.

    Breakfast and dinner are included and are freshly prepared by a local cook at the volunteer accommodation. Meals typically include a mix of local Tanzanian dishes such as rice, beans, vegetables, bananas (matoke), ugali, and chapati, giving volunteers an authentic experience of Tanzanian home-style cooking.
    Lunch is not included, giving volunteers the flexibility to explore local cafés, street food, restaurants, or markets during the day while on placement or in town.
    Drinking water is provided at the accommodation, and volunteers are advised to use bottled or filtered water when outside for safety and health reasons.
    Vegetarian options can be arranged upon request, and the kitchen team is happy to accommodate basic dietary requirements whenever possible.
    This arrangement allows volunteers to enjoy nutritious home-cooked meals while also experiencing the rich and diverse local food culture of Tanzania.

    This program is available year-round, and volunteers can start any Monday.

    We recommend arriving at least one day before your start date to allow time to settle in and attend orientation.

    Volunteers should arrive at:

    Airport pickup is included in the program fee. A member of the Gilys Children Foundation team will meet you upon arrival and transfer you safely to your accommodation in Arusha.

    On your first day, you will receive a comprehensive orientation covering:

    First Day of Volunteering
    Your placement will begin the following day after orientation. You will be guided by a local coordinator and introduced to your daily tasks and responsibilities.
