    About the program

    BCSS Dive Master
The BCSS Dive Master Program is a zero-to-professional pathway designed to take individuals with no prior diving experience and train them all the way to Dive Master level within a real marine research environment.

Marine ecosystems all around the world are under increasing pressure from climate change, unsustainable fishing practices, and limited capacity for monitoring and protection. A key challenge is the shortage of well-trained dive professionals who understand both safe dive operations and the importance of conservation. This program addresses that gap by developing divers from the ground up, combining internationally recognized dive training with exposure to scientific and conservation-focused operations.

    The program
This is a structured training program that progresses through all major PADI certifications, starting from beginner level (no experience required) up to Dive Master.

Participants are not only trained to dive, but also to operate in a professional environment. As they progress, they gradually take on more responsibility within daily dive operations.

The role of the participant evolves over time and includes:

    • Learning fundamental diving skills and safety procedures
    • Assisting with dive preparation and logistics
    • Supporting daily operations of the dive center
    • Developing leadership skills in diving
    • Gaining awareness of marine ecosystems and responsible diving practices

    Location
The program takes place at the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS), located within the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park in Mozambique. This is a remote, protected marine environment known for its high biodiversity, including coral reefs, megafauna, and seagrass ecosystems.

Participants live on-site at our sustainably built and maintained research station. Accommodation is simple but comfortable, reflecting a working field station. The remote setting offers full immersion in ocean-based activities and nature.

    Team and working environment
Participants work closely with experienced dive instructors, dive masters, and the broader BCSS team, which includes researchers and operational staff. This creates a professional and structured learning environment where diving is directly linked to real-world applications.

    Expectations and requirements

No prior diving experience is required. However, we expect participants to be committed, adaptable, and willing to learn in a disciplined environment.

    Participants should:

    • Be comfortable in the water and in good physical condition
    • Be willing to follow structured training and safety standards
    • Be proactive and engaged in daily activities
    • Adapt to remote living conditions

    Participants can expect:

    • Full progression from beginner to Dive Master certification
    • Daily hands-on training and in-water experience
    • Exposure to real dive operations in a professional setting
    • A challenging but rewarding learning experience

Basic dive equipment is provided, but participants are encouraged to bring personal items such as mask, fins, and wetsuit.

The BCSS station was carefully designed to blend with the surrounding environment, causing minimum impact. The station was hand-built using the island's skilled residents, with local materials such as coconut wood, reed walls and roof thatching. We power our station with renewable solar energy and are committed to striving towards zero-waste while conducting sustainable waste management. Where possible, we use permaculture to be more self sufficient. We are honored to be an active member of the community.

BCSS Dive Center can accommodate up to 10 visitors on site and provides a choice of single and double (bunks) rooms. The accommodation complex features communal bathroom facilities, shared with the tented camp located near the station.
