    About the program

Experience everything from black sands to Luwak Coffee (we’ll let you find out why it’s so special!) to miles of stunning beaches; this trip is an opportunity not to miss out on.

Out of Indonesia’s staggering 17,508 islands, Bali is by far the most popular for its ancient culture, extravagant temples, spectacular rice paddies and striking beaches. This PMGY experience trip offers you the undeniably exciting chance to explore the wonders of Bali whilst making a positive different volunteering at local projects.

    EXPLORING BALI

Bali’s popularity has increased massively since the 1980s, with tourism related business bringing in a significant portion of the island’s economy. However, many tourists are oblivious to the limited opportunities and small profits for hours of labour the behind the scenes for locals. This makes your PMGY experience extremely unique as you get to enjoy the pleasures of Bali whilst giving back to the community through impacts made at our projects.

With travelling distances so short and plenty of sites to see, it means your 4 weeks are spent enjoying the beauties of the island without having to spend lots of time in transit. Get ready for volcanic mountains, picturesque beaches and plenty of greenery!

Your group will travel together by private minibus visiting some of the best destinations that Bali has to offer, as well as some of the hidden gems most visitors never see! A PMGY coordinator and English speaking guide will accompany you throughout your stay so you’ll get the chance to learn so much about the country’s culture and history.

    VOLUNTEERING

PMGY’s volunteer programme in Tabanan runs throughout the year, so you will be working alongside existing PMGY volunteers. Over the course of the two weeks, you will have an opportunity to join one of our community based (teaching or childcare).

Volunteering allows you to truly immerse yourself in the local culture, spending time in the community and learning about what life is like for the Balinese people. Getting involved in our projects ensures that you’ll make a positive impact during your time with PMGY.

The one thing that every visitor to Bali will never forget are the exciting traditions and intriguing culture of the local community. This is coupled by genuine friendliness from locals who can’t wait to welcome you into their lives and share their ways of living with you.

You can choose either the teaching or childcare project you’d like to do during the online application process.

We encourage participants to prepare as much as possible for their teaching programme overseas. You can make the most out of your time by completing our convenient, inexpensive and international accredited 60-hour Online TEFL Course for just $150.

    Typical day

Almost every day you will be doing something different on this adventure, but here is an example of what a day on this trip will look like:

Rise and shine! It’s 12am and time to get moving. We’ve got a 2-3-hour journey to the base of Mount Batur before beginning our ascent to the peak, sitting just over 5,500 feet above sea level.

The sacred mountain draws tourists from all over the island for its breath-taking views over Lake Batur. You’ll make it to the top just after 6am and arrive at the conveniently named ‘Sunrise Point’ to hopefully take in a very impressive sunrise that the lack of sleep will make up for! At 7am we will continue the trek around the entire crater before beginning the descent at the finishing point around an hour later back down to Toyabungkah Village.

From the village, we will head directly to Toya Devasya Hot Springs for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Here there are four natural hot spring pools to take a dip in and soothe your calf muscles!

After lunch, we’ll begin our next journey to Lovina, another beach resort, but this time located on the North Coast.

Depending on which project you choose to do on your online application will influence the daily timings you join us at the project.

The final weekend in between your volunteering is free for you to explore how you wish too.

You’ll be in personal contact with our local coordinators every day across your two weeks volunteering with us so if you need anything we are there for you 24/7.

Airport Pickup at Ngurah Rai International Airport

You should arrive into Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar (airport code DPS) on the selected Sunday start date. You will be met at the airport by one of our local staff or an appointed driver who will be holding a named sign. They will take you to your accommodation where you will spend the rest of your day at leisure.

    Accommodation

All your accommodation is organised by PMGY. During the travelling part of your trip you will stay at guesthouses/hotels in the various places we will visit. You’ll share a room with fellow travellers. All rooms will be single sex, air conditioned and have western bathrooms.

During the last two weeks of the Real Bali Experience, you will stay in one of our Volunteer Houses in Tabanan. The accommodation is basic but comfortable. You will be living with other PMGY volunteers.

The Volunteer House is located in Tabanan. Each room has bunkbeds, shared with between 6-10 volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with bed linen and air conditioning. You will have a designated space to store your clothes as well as a personal locker for storage of your valuables.

Bathrooms are shared. Each bathroom has a shower and western style toilet. The water is often cold, however, this shouldn’t be a problem as Bali is hot and humid all year round! There is Wi-Fi within available within the house, although volunteers should note that this is unpredictable. There are several communal spaces across the houses for the volunteers to hang out and relax. There is also a shared refrigerator to store any personal food items.

A member of our local team will also live at the house. This ensures that you have round the clock support and security.

During our busiest months (June to September) you may be placed at alternative accommodation. This could be a nearby guesthouse or one of our summer Volunteer Houses.

    Food & Beverages

You will be served three meals per day across the whole four weeks of the Real Experience. Most of the meals are traditional Indonesian and Balinese specific dishes. This typically consists of a lot of rice and chicken, although vegetarian options are always available. The meals for the first two weeks will usually be served in a buffet format or as part of a set menu. Here is an example of the meals you can expect:

Breakfast: Toast, pancakes, fruit, eggs, tea/coffee

Lunch: Mixed rice, vegetables, curries, salad

Dinner: Fried rice, fried chicken, noodles, spaghetti

    * Our team will do their best to cater for any dietary requirements but there may be instances where you may need to purchase alternative ingredients at your own expense.

There is a large choice of restaurants and local warungs (authentic, local food stalls) in Tabanan. The food on offer is traditional Balinese cuisine – typically amazing and mainly vegetarian! There may also be a western option served once or twice every week and there are restaurants serving western food available around a 20 minute walk from the Volunteer House.
