    Arrival & Pick-Up Process
    • Airport Pick-Up:
Upon arrival, a designated driver will meet the volunteer at the airport, holding a placard with the volunteer’s name for easy identification. In some cases, the volunteer and driver may have already made contact prior to arrival.

    If Arriving from Mombasa:
    • Volunteers are picked up from Moi International Airport (Mombasa) and driven to the bus station.

    • The driver assists with boarding a bus to Malindi.

    • Upon arrival in Malindi (approx. 2.5 hours later), another team member receives the volunteer and transports them to their accommodation—just a 10-minute ride away.

    • This journey provides an early and enriching glimpse into African travel culture and local life.

    If Arriving from Nairobi:

Volunteers can travel to the coast via air, road, or rail:

    • By Air:
Volunteers are picked up at Malindi Airport upon arrival and transferred directly to their destination.

Volunteers are escorted to the bus station in Nairobi, assisted with boarding, and picked up upon arrival in Malindi. These buses are safe and typically travel overnight.

    • By Rail (SGR Train to Mombasa):
Train departures from Nairobi are at 08:00, 15:00, and 22:00.
The 08:00 AM train is most recommended, arriving in Mombasa around 14:00, allowing for a scenic 2-hour shuttle ride to Malindi.
Our team provides pick-up at the SGR Mombasa Terminus.

    Details on arrival

    Programme Start and Volunteer Orientation

The programme runs on weekdays, but volunteers are encouraged to arrive over the weekend. This allows time to settle in and get familiar with the surroundings before starting their work.

Upon arrival, volunteers undergo an orientation designed to help them understand the environment, household rules, and daily routines. During this time, they receive important information, are assigned their beds and bedding, and get SIM cards for easy communication with family and friends. Volunteers are also introduced to local social amenities to help them navigate the area comfortably.

Each volunteer is assigned a driver who will transport them to and from school every morning. For those who prefer walking or running, the route is clearly shown.

At the project site, volunteers participate in a two-day induction to learn about their responsibilities and what to expect during their placement. On the first day, they observe the daily activities, and on the second day, they start working under supervision until they feel confident to work independently.
