    About the program

As a volunteer in our school project, you will have the opportunity to teach children at Yikene Primary School in Bolgatanga (Bolga). The pupils are typically between 3 and 15 years old, and classes are warm, interactive, and community-oriented.

Volunteers may choose to teach from a range of subjects, including English Language, Mathematics (Arithmetic), and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)—subjects that have been particularly popular with past volunteers. All volunteers work under the direct supervision of trained and qualified teachers, ensuring guidance, support, and quality teaching standards.

Each class consists of approximately 20–35 pupils. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own creativity into lessons to make learning lively, engaging, and child-friendly.

    What You Will Learn

Through this education project, volunteers will gain practical experience in:

    • Relating effectively with school children

    • Managing and controlling a classroom

    • Understanding how typical classroom sessions in Ghana are conducted

    • Conducting basic class assessments and evaluations

Volunteers who arrive during the regular school term will participate in normal classroom sessions, while those joining during school holidays will support extra classes organized as part of our summer programme.

To ensure a positive experience, Future for Africa provides ongoing support, especially for volunteers who may initially struggle with language barriers or classroom management. Our team works closely with volunteers to make teaching and learning both effective and enjoyable.

By the end of your volunteering period, you will have positively impacted students’ learning while also engaging with them on a more personal, one-on-one level.

    Roles

    • Prepare lesson notes to guide teaching sessions

    • Conduct daily class exercises and assignments to assess students’ understanding

    • Establish clear classroom rules and expectations

    • Maintain discipline and create an orderly learning environment

    • Identify and resolve classroom challenges during lessons

    Tasks

    • Identify and reward high-performing students

    • Support weaker students and those with special educational needs

    • Identify emerging challenges within the school and contribute to practical solutions
