About the program

This project falls under the umbrella of Sports Development. Our aim with the Skate Club Project is to build self confidence and a passion for sport among the participants of the program. Volunteers are not required to have any experience with skateboarding, as volunteers will also receive lessons from our skilled project leaders. This project combines fun activity with lessons in safety and the teaching of life skills such as discipline, structure, communication, and dedication.
As this is an incentive-based program, it encourages students from local schools to work hard in the classroom and behave both in school and on project. Since implementing this fun incentive for the children, we have noticed a drastic reduction in the school drop-out rates. With all of our sport programs, we hope to promote physical activity as a positive past time to steer youth away from negative influences within their communities and curb boredom after school.
Volunteers will assist with one of our School and Educare programs in the morning, and in the afternoon will take part in skate lessons for the children. Volunteers of the Skate Club Project will also have the opportunity to assist with our other Sport Development initiatives such as the Swim and Adventure Surf Club Project. This project works hand-in-hand with the Surf Project, as practice on skateboards will inevitably improve their skills on a surfboard in the water as well.
The Skate Club Project was created and is lead by two of our female interns. For us, it is important to teach these youth that girls can perform just as well as boys in sport and can do anything that they want in life. This is an important life-lesson for the individuals from township and settlement communities.
