    About the program

Are you ready to see how business drives social change? Join Good Karma in Nepal for a unique Social Entrepreneurship placement. Unlike traditional volunteering, this program puts you at the intersection of our ethical trekking company and our non-profit foundation.

You will work directly with our team to manage operations, boost digital marketing, and streamline administration. Your goal is to grow our trekking business, which is the primary funding engine for our community projects. This is a hands-on lesson in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and small business management.

Perfect for students and professionals in business, marketing, or tourism, this program offers tangible resume experience. You will gain skills in content creation, strategy, and ethical tourism operations—all while living in the stunning Himalayas. Help us prove that tourism is a force for good!

    Why this works:

    • The Hook: It immediately frames the program as "Social Entrepreneurship," distinguishing it from teaching or care work.

    • The "Double Bottom Line": It clearly explains the link: More Treks = More Charity. This motivates business-minded volunteers.

    • The Skills: It lists specific skills (marketing, strategy, operations) that students need for their CVs.

    1. Description of Surroundings and Locations

Where will the volunteers be working and living?

Our program is based in the vibrant, historic heart of Kathmandu, Nepal. You will be staying at our dedicated Volunteer Home, which is ideally located within walking distance of the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa (The Monkey Temple).

The living arrangement is a true cultural immersion; you will live in a communal setting with other like-minded volunteers from all corners of the globe, alongside your local host, Nabraj, and his family. This setup provides a safe, warm, and authentic "home away from home" experience. Your work will take place between our foundation office and our trekking hub, allowing you to experience the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu’s social and tourism sectors while returning to a peaceful, family-oriented environment each evening.

    2. Team and Collaboration

With whom will the volunteers be working?

You will be working directly with the founder and Managing Director, Nabraj Ghimire, and the core team of the Good Karma Foundation and Good Karma Trekking.

Because this is a management-focused role, you will also collaborate closely with:

    • Local Staff: To understand the logistics of sustainable tourism and NGO operations in Nepal.

    • International Volunteers: You will often work in pairs or small groups on marketing, placement, and administrative projects.

    • The Local Community: Depending on current projects, you may interact with the schools or monasteries supported by the foundation.

    3. Expectations and Equipment

What do you expect from the volunteers? What can they expect from you?

    • What we expect from you: We aren’t looking for specific technical degrees, but we do require a friendly, proactive, and open-minded attitude. We expect volunteers to be willing to "roll up their sleeves" and support our ongoing foundation work, assist with trekking company management, help with volunteer placements, and contribute to our digital marketing efforts. Professionalism and a passion for social impact are key.

    • What you can expect from us: We provide a full-immersion experience. This includes:

      • Training & Mentorship: Deep insights into how a social enterprise functions.

      • Full Logistics: Comfortable accommodation and three nutritious, local meals per day.

      • Adventure & Culture: On weekends, we organize walking tours around the hidden gems of Kathmandu and short hikes in the surrounding hills to give you a true taste of Nepal’s beauty.

    • Equipment: You do not need to bring any special equipment. All necessary work materials, bedding, and daily essentials are provided. Just bring your laptop (if you have one for office work) and your enthusiasm!

Typical Day: Social Entrepreneurship & NGO Management

Your schedule will vary depending on the season and current projects, but a standard day focuses on moving both the business and the charity forward.

    • 08:00 AM – Breakfast: Start your day with a communal breakfast at the volunteer house. Enjoy tea or coffee while chatting with other volunteers about the day ahead.

    • 09:30 AM – Morning Briefing: Arrive at the Good Karma office. You’ll have a quick "stand-up" meeting with the founder or manager to discuss the day's priorities—whether that's responding to new trek inquiries or planning a fundraising campaign.

    • 10:00 AM – Operations & Strategy Block: This is your focus time. You might be updating the trekking website, managing social media channels, improving SEO, or organizing donor databases for the Foundation.

    • 01:00 PM – Lunch Break: Enjoy a traditional Nepali lunch (like Dal Bhat or Momos) with the local staff. This is a great time to practice your Nepali and learn about the culture.

    • 02:00 PM – Creative & Project Work: The afternoon is often more dynamic. You might draft a grant proposal, create content for a newsletter, or visit one of our local project sites (like a school or community center) to take photos and document progress for donors.

    • 05:00 PM – Wrap Up: Finish your tasks for the day and head back to the accommodation.

    • 06:00 PM – Free Time: The evenings are yours! Explore the vibrant streets of Kathmandu/Thamel, take a yoga class, visit a temple, or relax with fellow volunteers.

Weekend Note: Weekends are generally free! Since you are working with a trekking company, we encourage you to go hiking, visit nearby heritage sites like Bhaktapur, or take short trips to experience the natural beauty you are helping to promote.

Free Time & Weekends: Explore the Magic of Nepal

At Good Karma, we believe that exploring Nepal is just as important as the work you do in the office. Your evenings and weekends are free to immerse yourself in the culture, history, and adventure of the Himalayas.

Evenings in Kathmandu After your work day finishes, dive into the vibrant streets of Thamel, the traveler’s hub of Kathmandu. You can relax in rooftop cafes, browse colorful markets, or take a yoga class. For a truly spiritual experience, head to Swayambhunath (The Monkey Temple) to watch the sunset over the valley or witness the evening Aarti ceremony at Pashupatinath Temple.

Weekend Adventures On weekends, step back in time by visiting the ancient UNESCO World Heritage cities of Patan and Bhaktapur, famous for their intricate wood carvings and medieval architecture. Nature lovers can enjoy day hikes in the Shivapuri National Park on the valley rim.

Jungle Safari Option (Highly Recommended!) Looking for a total change of scenery? Many of our volunteers use their weekend to take a 2-night trip to Chitwan National Park (organized easily through our Good Karma travel desk). Swap the mountains for the jungle! You can go on a jeep safari to spot the rare One-Horned Rhinoceros, canoe down the Rapti River, and experience the Tharu culture. It is the perfect way to recharge before a new week of impact.

Arrival & Airport Pickup: We've Got You Covered

Your journey begins the moment you land! We want your arrival in Nepal to be completely stress-free and welcoming.

Where to Fly Please book your flight to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. We recommend sharing your flight details with us as soon as you book so we can schedule your driver.

Meeting the Team Upon arrival, after you clear customs and collect your luggage, proceed to the airport exit gates. Look for a friendly member of the Good Karma team who will be waiting for you. They will be holding a clearly visible sign with your name or the Good Karma Foundation logo. Do not worry about the taxi touts outside; just look for our official driver!

The Ride Home You will be driven via a safe, private transfer directly to your volunteer house or homestay. It is a great chance to see the city for the first time without the hassle of navigating public transport.

Flight Delays? No Problem. We track all incoming flights. If your flight is delayed or rescheduled, simply send us a message via WhatsApp or email. We will adjust the pickup time so someone is always there to greet you.

    Where You Will Stay

It’s a "home away from home" located close to local shops and transport, giving you the perfect base to explore Kathmandu while making lifelong friends.

    Food & Beverages

Food & Drinks: A Taste of the Himalayas

One of the highlights of your time in Nepal will be the food! It is fresh, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. We ensure you are well-fed with three wholesome meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) included in your program.

    What to Expect

    • Breakfast: A simple, energizing start to the day. Expect toast, eggs, porridge, or pancakes, always served with a steaming cup of Masala Chiya (Nepali spiced milk tea) or coffee.

    • Lunch: During your work break, we provide a freshly prepared lunch. This is often a lighter meal like fried rice, noodles (Chowmein), or roti with vegetables, shared with the local team.

    • Dinner: The main event! You will typically eat Dal Bhat, the national dish of Nepal. It consists of steamed rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and spicy pickles. It is healthy, filling, and locals swear it gives you "24-hour power"!

Snacks & Treats While all your main meals are covered, you must try the local street food during your free time! Momos (steamed dumplings) and Thukpa (warm noodle soup) are delicious, safe to eat at reputable spots, and cost less than $2.

Safe Drinking Water Health First: You should never drink tap water in Nepal. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle with a built-in filter, or purchasing sealed bottled water (widely available for about $0.20) to stay hydrated and healthy.

Dietary Requirements Nepal is a paradise for vegetarians and vegans! Most traditional dishes are plant-based by default. If you have allergies or specific diets (gluten-free, dairy-free), just let us know on arrival, and our cook will happily accommodate you.
