    About the program

    About Boresha Maisha Projects

The saying "Boresha Maisha" means "improving lives" in Swahili and that is exactly what we wish to accomplish with these volunteer projects – to create possibilities for communities and individuals to work abroad for a cause and grow and help create a better future.

Volunteering abroad, in Tanzania, can be a challenge, especially since today there are hundreds of volunteer organizations out there and it's hard to know which one is the right one. Boresha Maisha Projects emerged from a pursuit to inspire and support community development ethically, and over the long term. Having seen the bad effects of "voluntourism" many of the volunteering programs create, we wished to find more sustainable projects and causes, where the impacts will last and, not be forgotten by the next arriving volunteers. We wish to create programs specifically for volunteers or students with the appropriate skills and motivations.

    Program Overview

Step into a transformative role where sports meets education in one of Tanzania's most dynamic school environments. Our Sports & Health Education Program isn't just about teaching games – it's about revolutionizing how an entire generation understands wellness, builds confidence, and develops lifelong healthy habits. You'll become part of the School's mission to create Tanzania's next generation of health-conscious leaders while potentially launching students into national sports leagues.

    Target Community

Meet the bright, energetic students of our partner School – 250+ young minds aged 7-18 who represent the future of Tanzania. These aren't just students; they're aspiring athletes, curious learners, and community leaders in the making. From shy kindergarteners taking their first steps in organized play to ambitious teenagers dreaming of national football leagues, each student brings unique potential waiting to be unlocked through proper guidance and opportunity.

    The Challenge

In Tanzania, cultural misconceptions about health and success, combined with limited access to nutritious foods and virtually no affordable after-school sports programs, create significant barriers to youth wellness. Many students lack basic knowledge about nutrition, exercise benefits, and how lifestyle choices impact their long-term health and academic performance. Plus children in Tanzania are Football mad, and just love the game whether there is rain, hail or shine.

    Our Partnership Approach

Working directly with the Schools staff, we're building a sustainable sports and health curriculum that will continue long after volunteers leave. Our program addresses immediate educational gaps while training local teachers and establishing systems for ongoing sports leagues, health workshops, and community wellness events.

    Your Role & Hands-On Activities

    • Morning Health Classes: Teach interactive lessons on human anatomy, nutrition, and wellness to different age groups using creative methods and visual aids

    • Afternoon Sports Training: Lead football, basketball, and volleyball sessions, or design your own games and fitness activities

    • Curriculum Development: Collaborate with teachers to create lasting health and sports programs

    • Event Organization: Help plan sports carnivals, inter-class competitions, and health awareness campaigns

    • Mentorship: Build meaningful relationships with students while modeling healthy lifestyle choices

    What You'll Learn & Gain

    • Teaching Skills: Develop creative educational techniques for diverse age groups and learning styles

    • Cross-Cultural Communication: Navigate language barriers and cultural differences in educational settings

    • Program Development: Experience building sustainable curricula and training local staff

    • Sports Leadership: Enhance coaching abilities while adapting activities for limited resources

    • Health Education Expertise: Deepen understanding of community health challenges and solutions

    • Personal Growth: Build confidence, adaptability, and cultural awareness through meaningful community engagement

Turn Your Volunteer Experience Into an Accredited Diploma

Your time volunteering can become much more than an unforgettable experience. Alongside your placement, you have the opportunity to complete an internationally recognised accredited diploma, built entirely around the work you're already doing in Tanzania. With no exams and only a small amount of additional work completed online throughout your programme, you'll graduate with a recognised qualification that can strengthen your CV, support university applications and, in many countries, even contribute towards academic credit.

Managing Your Expectations: The Reality of Volunteering

Whilst we do our best to be as accurate as possible with what to expect on your program, the nature of volunteering is fundamentally about coming to one of the most challenged parts of the world, learning to understand the barriers and challenges surrounding community development, and then being flexible, adaptable, and proactive in working on solutions to how you can be of best benefit during your time there.

Volunteering is, more than anything, a learning experience—so please always expect the unexpected. It's not a curated or meticulously planned travel experience. In fact, it's quite the opposite. You might find that some community members are incredibly welcoming from day one, eager to have you lead activities and drive initiatives. Others may be more skeptical or hesitant to have you heavily involved right away, preferring to continue with their established ways of doing things.

Don't let this worry you, and don't be quick to assume you're in the wrong place. Take the time to adapt to a new culture and its challenges. Focus first and foremost on building rapport with those you're working with—get to know the students, teachers, NGO staff, and community members. Show respect, demonstrate that you're not there to immediately change their ways, and then slowly and respectfully introduce ideas about how you could be better involved, support classroom management, or share the workload.

If you find you're not doing what you expected, please lean on our coordinators for support—there is almost always a solution, and that's exactly what they're there for.

Ultimately, our volunteers are the ones who drive all of our initiatives as an organization. Our core focus is on capacity building and making sustainable improvements through sharing ideas, skills, and knowledge. As such, we cannot always provide a pre-set, specifically structured experience. We can, however, guide, support, and equip you along the way.

The volunteers who are flexible, open-minded, adaptable, willing to work through challenges, and take the most initiative in their programs are always the ones who have the best and most enriching experiences!

A Day in Your Life - Sports & Health Education Program

8:00 AM - Morning Departure & Health Classes

Each day on our Sports and Health Volunteer Program, you will start around 8 AM. Depart from the volunteer house and head to the nearby school for an engaging 2-3 hours of teaching basic health to children. Classes cover fundamental human body knowledge, diet essentials, and emphasize the importance of exercise. Receive a detailed schedule of free periods upon arrival, allowing you to prepare for your classes held in well-equipped classrooms with blackboards and chalk. We encourage creativity in your teaching methods!

    12:00 PM - Lunch & Afternoon Sports

Following health classes, share lunch with the children before diving into sports and exercise activities. Begin with the youngest children, offering training in football, basketball, or volleyball with all necessary equipment provided. Alternatively, design your own games and exercises to keep the children active. As the afternoon progresses, older children join in, following a detailed program provided by the school upon your arrival.

    Afternoon/Evening - Football Culture & Tournaments

Many sports programs, particularly football, run in the afternoons, and you may have the opportunity to attend afternoon or evening sports games or be involved in football tournaments at special times of the year. The students and school's director are football fanatics to say the least! This passion creates an incredibly energetic atmosphere where your coaching and support can help propel talented students toward their dreams of joining national leagues.

    Weekly Schedule & Collaboration

Work from Monday to Friday with the option for activities on Saturdays if desired. Your role extends beyond teaching, as you collaborate with school staff to enhance and expand the sports program.

Your weekly schedule and program activities can vary depending on the time of year, so be ready to be flexible and very hands on engaged with the schools sports programs, health curriculum development and delivery, and more!
