    About the program

Community Compassion: Extending Hope and Dignity

Join the Good Karma Foundation in our vital "Community Compassion" outreach, a powerful commitment to fighting poverty and reducing inequalities (SDGs 1 & 10). This program is not just about charity; it's about restoring dignity and human connection for our homeless and most excluded neighbors. Volunteers actively engage in street outreach, providing essential social support to break the cycle of isolation. Your work will involve distributing basic provisions, offering crucial hygiene education, and connecting dependent persons with necessary resources. Be the light that counters exclusion and provides the fundamental compassion every person deserves. Step forward and help us build a community where no one is left behind.

    Key Highlights of the Program:

    • Focus: Homeless & Excluded Persons

    • Core Activities: Street Outreach, Social Support, Basic Hygiene Education, Resource Distribution.

    • Alignment: Directly supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

    • Goal: Offer basic provisions and help fight exclusion.

    1. Introduction to Our Homeless Support Program

    Why is our program important?

Our program is vital because while Kathmandu is rich in culture, it faces a silent crisis of urban poverty. The homeless community, including elderly individuals, women, and children, are highly vulnerable to health crises, substance abuse, and exploitation, especially during the cold winter months. We provide a crucial safety net of direct human care that supplements the limited resources provided by the government. By mobilizing international support, we ensure these individuals are not forgotten.

Which social issues do you face?

Our core focus addresses several interconnected issues:

    • Destitution and Exposure: Many individuals lack basic food, shelter, and warm clothing, leading to severe health risks.

    • Health Crisis: High rates of untreated injuries, chronic conditions, and lack of mental health support among the street population.

    • Social Isolation: The homeless are often marginalized, leading to profound loneliness and loss of dignity.

    • Lack of Sustainable Solutions: The root causes (poverty, family abandonment, lack of affordable housing) require long-term investment that short-term aid alone cannot provide.

How do you try to solve these issues?

    We employ a two-pronged approach:

    1. Direct Relief (Immediate Need): We conduct regular street outreach to distribute hot, nutritious meals, blankets, and essential first aid. This immediate care stabilizes their health and earns their trust.

    2. Dignity and Pathway Support (Long-Term Need): We partner with local shelters to facilitate temporary residency for those ready to leave the streets. Our aim is not just to feed, but to treat every individual with respect and provide a pathway to rehabilitation, reintegration, and restoration of self-dignity.

    2. With whom will the volunteers be working?

Our volunteers work with a diverse group of people, both in the community and within our team:

    • The Beneficiaries: Volunteers will primarily be working with elderly homeless individuals, displaced women, and men living on the streets or residing in partner community shelters in the Kathmandu Valley. These individuals often suffer from neglect, physical ailment, or emotional trauma.

    • Local Nepali Staff and Leaders: You will be closely mentored and working alongside our dedicated Nepali team—including the Project Coordinator, community outreach workers, and local support staff. This ensures that all efforts are culturally sensitive and meet the community's authentic needs.

    • Community Partners: Depending on the project, you may work with staff from local NGOs  during joint distribution drives or at small community health camps.

    • Fellow International Volunteers: You will be living and working with a small group of like-minded international volunteers from around the world, creating a supportive team environment.

    3. Expectations and Practicalities

What do you expect from the volunteers?

We seek volunteers who possess the following qualities and commitments:

    • Deep Empathy and Patience: You must be prepared to work with individuals facing severe trauma, mental health challenges, and addiction, treating them with unconditional respect and dignity.

    • Flexibility and Resilience: Work environments can be unpredictable, challenging, and lack the comforts of home. A willingness to adapt to basic living conditions and sudden changes in the daily schedule is essential.

    • Cultural Sensitivity: You are an invited guest in Nepal. We expect modesty in dress, respect for local customs (e.g., greeting with Namaste, respecting holy sites), and a commitment to listening and learning from the local team.

    • Self-Initiative: While you will be fully supported, we encourage volunteers to bring ideas and take initiative, whether it's organizing an activity at a shelter or simply taking the time to listen to someone's story.

What can the volunteers expect from you?

We are committed to providing a safe, impactful, and ethical volunteer experience:

    • Full In-Country Support: 24/7 access to our experienced Nepali Project Coordinator for any emergencies, questions, or guidance.

    • Comprehensive Orientation: A thorough cultural and safety briefing upon arrival in Kathmandu, covering basic Nepali language phrases, transport, and cultural norms.

    • Meaningful Placement: We ensure your time is spent on tasks that directly support the community's needs, maximizing your positive impact.

Do the volunteers have to bring special equipment?

No special equipment is required, but we strongly recommend packing the following:

    • Warm Layers: Essential, especially for evening outreach in the colder months (Oct-Feb).

    • Modest/Comfortable Clothing: Trousers or long skirts/dresses are preferred over shorts. Long-sleeved shirts are best for sun protection and respecting local modesty.

    • Personal First-Aid/Toiletries: Any prescription medication, a personal hand sanitizer, and a basic first-aid kit (for your own minor needs).

    • Reusable Water Bottle: Nepal relies on boiled or filtered water, and we encourage all volunteers to reduce plastic waste.

    Typical day

A typical day volunteering with the Good Karma Foundation (GKF) begins early, between 6:00 and 7:00 AM, allowing time for personal preparation. An optional morning yoga session is available from 7:00 to 8:00 AM to promote wellness and community, followed by a shared breakfast at the home-stay or volunteer house at 8:30 AM. The core service block runs from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, during which volunteers travel to their project area to focus on essential support activities such as educational activities, special needs care, or workshop preparation. A one-hour lunch break is taken at 12:00 PM, either at the project site or back at the home-stay. The afternoon session, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, involves focused one-on-one time with the beneficiaries, project clean-up, and the return home. Volunteers then have free time from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM to explore Kathmandu, including temples and the city center. The day concludes with a shared dinner and discussion at 7:30 PM with the host family or fellow volunteers, allowing everyone to reflect on the day’s learning and share their experiences.

Airport Pickup at Tribhuvan International Airport

We understand that arriving at a busy international airport like Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu can be overwhelming. We prioritize your safe and hassle-free transfer from the moment you land.

    The Pickup Process:
Before You Fly: Once your arrival details (flight number, date, and time) are finalized, we will confirm your pickup and provide you with the full name and local contact number of the Nepali staff member who will meet you.

Upon Arrival: After you have successfully completed the visa process (if obtaining a Visa on Arrival) and collected your baggage, you will proceed through the final customs check and exit into the main Arrivals Hall.

The Welcome: Our dedicated Nepali representative will be waiting for you just outside the exit gate, holding a clear sign with your name and the program’s logo.

Transfer: They will immediately escort you to the pre-arranged, safe private vehicle (car or van) and transfer you directly to the Volunteer House. This service is included in your program fee.

    Important Note on TIA:
Baggage Handlers: Please be aware that as you exit the airport, you will be approached by many people offering to carry your bags for a fee. We strongly advise you to decline these services and keep hold of your luggage. Your designated representative will assist you with luggage once they have met you.

Safety: Do not leave the airport premises with anyone who is not your confirmed representative. If you have any trouble finding our staff, please contact the emergency number we provide in your pre-departure package immediately.

We aim to make your first moments in Nepal as smooth and welcoming as possible so you can begin your volunteer experience refreshed and ready to connect with the community.

    Accommodation

Your comfort, safety, and cultural immersion are our top priorities. You will be staying in our dedicated Volunteer House located in a safe, authentic, and easily accessible local neighborhood of Kathmandu, away from the main tourist crowds.

    House Details & Facilities:

You will stay in a shared room with 1 other volunteer of the same gender. Rooms are simple, clean, and equipped with comfortable single beds and a shared shelf or wardrobe space. Bathrooms are shared among volunteers. We provide clean, modern Western-style toilets and hot water for showers (though hot water availability can occasionally be limited in the colder months or due to power cuts, which is standard in Nepal).

    Security:

The house is managed by a full-time local coordinator/house manager. The main door is locked at night. We recommend bringing a small padlock to use on the provided storage space/locker in your room for maximum security of your valuables.

    Common Areas:

The house includes a communal living area, a dining space, and often a rooftop area perfect for relaxing, connecting with fellow volunteers, and enjoying the mountain views.Other AmenitiesFree Wi-Fi is available. Local AccessThe neighborhood has small local shops (kirana stores) for snacks and necessities. You will find reliable ATMs and larger supermarkets within a 5-10 minute walk.Volunteer CommunityWe generally host between 6 to 12 international volunteers at a time, depending on the season. This provides a supportive, social atmosphere while still allowing for personalized experience.

    Food & Beverages

Your meals are a central part of your cultural immersion and are included in your program fee.

    Food Provided:

You will receive two traditional and hearty meals per day—Breakfast and Dinner. Lunch is usually taken at the project site or packed for you, depending on the day's schedule.

Staple Meal: The core of Nepali cuisine is Dal Bhat (steamed white rice served with a mild lentil soup, accompanied by seasonal vegetable curry and spicy achar or pickle). This is a highly nutritious meal that you will enjoy most evenings.

Variety: To introduce variety, we also serve dishes like momos (dumplings, usually vegetable or chicken), chowmein (stir-fried noodles), curries, and occasional bread-based breakfasts.

Breakfast: Typically lighter, consisting of tea (chiya), bread (toast or roti), and sometimes eggs or oatmeal.

    Dietary Requirements:

Vegetarians: Nepali cuisine is naturally very vegetarian-friendly due to the large Hindu and Buddhist populations. We can easily and happily accommodate vegetarian volunteers.

Vegans and Allergies: If you are strictly vegan, or have any serious allergies (e.g., gluten-free, nut allergies), please inform us on your application. We will take every reasonable step to ensure your meals are safe and suitable, but please note that kitchens are often small and cross-contamination, while rare, is a possibility.

    Drinks:

Tea (Chiya): Sweet, milky spiced tea is a staple of Nepali hospitality and will be served often.

Drinking Water: We provide a filtered water dispenser at the Volunteer House. Volunteers must bring their own reusable bottle and refill it from this source to ensure they are drinking safe water and to help us reduce plastic waste. We strongly advise against drinking tap water.
