    About the program

Care & Support for Intellectually Disabled Women – Sungava Homes, Kathmandu

Volunteers will be placed at Sungava Homes (LID), a warm, safe, and nurturing residential center in Kathmandu dedicated to supporting intellectually disabled women and girls. The center sits in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood near Swayambhu, one of the most sacred and historic UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city. The surroundings are calm, friendly, and community-oriented—an ideal environment for meaningful care work and gentle daily routines.

The facility itself is modest but full of life: open classrooms, activity spaces, a small garden area, and communal rooms where residents spend their days learning, creating, practicing skills, and socializing.

    Where Volunteers Will Live

Volunteers will stay with a local, family-run homestay in central Kathmandu. This gives a warm introduction to Nepali culture, home-cooked meals, and comfortable rooms. Your homestay is conveniently located with easy transport to the center, and your volunteer schedule runs from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

With Whom Will the Volunteers Work?

    You will work directly with:

    • Intellectually disabled women and girls living at Sungava Homes

    • Local caregivers, teachers, social workers, and support staff

    • Occasionally, visiting therapists, trainers, and community workers

The environment is collaborative, respectful, and heart-centered. Volunteers become part of the daily routine and are welcomed like family.

What Do We Expect From Volunteers?

    We expect volunteers to bring:

    • Compassion, patience, and a caring attitude

    • Willingness to participate in daily caregiving and educational activities

    • Respect for all individuals, regardless of disability or background

    • A mindset open to cultural differences and teamwork

    • Reliability—showing up on time and being present with the residents

No professional background is required. The most important qualities are empathy and dedication.

What Can Volunteers Expect From Us?

    Volunteers will receive:

    • safe, supportive, and meaningful placement at a trusted community center

    • Guidance and orientation from Sungava staff

    • A welcoming homestay with meals and cultural immersion

    • A chance to learn about caregiving, disability support, women’s empowerment, and grassroots social work

    • Opportunities to build real connections and contribute to long-term positive change

Your experience will be impactful, structured, and deeply rewarding.

However, volunteers may bring items such as:

    • Educational stationery
