We strive to ensure your journey to the Ilam Tea Gardens is as smooth and stress-free as possible, focusing on a safe arrival, essential orientation, and seamless transition to your host family.
Program Start Dates
Best Time to Volunteer: While we host volunteers year-round, the most pleasant seasons for farm work and local travel are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to December).
The Arrival Process
1. Arrival in Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport - TIA)Airport Pickup: You must fly into Nepal’s only international airport, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu.
Upon clearing customs, a dedicated representative from our team will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name.
They will transfer you directly to a pre-arranged, secure guesthouse or hotel in Kathmandu for your first night's stay. This cost is included in your program fee.
A Tourist Visa is required and is the standard for volunteer work in Nepal. You can easily obtain this upon arrival at TIA.
Requirements: Have your passport (valid for at least six more months), one recent passport-sized photo, the address of your first night’s accommodation in Kathmandu, and cash (USD is preferred) to pay the visa fee (e.g., $50 USD for a 30-day visa).
Tip: You can save time by filling out the visa application form online within 15 days of your travel date and printing the submission receipt to present at the airport.
Orientation: On your arrival day (or the day after, depending on your flight time), you will receive a brief orientation covering cultural tips, basic Nepali phrases, health and safety guidelines, and the local context of the Ilam region.
Journey to Ilam: Duration Approximately 16 to 20 hoursRoute Distance~680 kilometers (420 miles)Departure Typically between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM from Kathmandu's main bus park (Gongabu or Kalanki).Arrival in Ilam Early the following morning (between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM). ( optionally you can also take flight by extra cost)
Your placement with the host family in the Ilam Tea Gardens begins immediately upon arrival in the village, ready for the routine to start the very next day.
