🌍 About the Program
Just off the stunning coast of Tanzania lies the enchanting island of Zanzibar—a place where time slows down and traditions run deep. For centuries, Zanzibar served as the gateway to East Africa, where merchants from India, Arabia, and China traded spices, ivory, and, sadly, slaves. This rich and complex history has shaped a vibrant island culture that blends African, Indian, and Arab influences—reflected in the people, architecture, food, and customs.
Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar, is a labyrinth of alleys and carved wooden doors, offering a sensory journey into the past. Surrounded by pristine beaches, swaying palms, and turquoise waters, it’s a paradise that combines tropical beauty with a compelling cultural experience.
Since 2011, our education project has been supporting local English-medium primary schools that serve over 2,000 students. Despite large class sizes and very limited resources, these schools work hard to offer quality education in English—a critical skill in Zanzibar’s tourism-driven economy. Volunteers play a key role in assisting teachers, leading English and math activities, and bringing much-needed energy and creativity into the classroom. You might also help run sports and after-school programs, or work with students needing extra support.
🧒 Who You’ll Help
Our focus is on children aged 6–18 years, many of whom attend school in double shifts due to a lack of facilities. Classrooms are basic, often overcrowded, and teachers struggle with English proficiency. Your support helps bridge that gap—whether through leading lessons, mentoring small groups, or simply sharing your skills, energy, and passion.
The schools are welcoming and culturally rooted, with 95% of the population being Muslim. You’ll be embraced by a community that appreciates your support—as long as you're respectful and open-minded.

🤝 Guidance & Support
You’ll be welcomed by Khaya’s local coordinators upon arrival in Stone Town. They’ll handle your airport pick-up, orient you to the area, introduce you to your school placement, and provide ongoing support throughout your stay.
🧠 What You Need to Know
Volunteering in Zanzibar is an immersive and eye-opening experience. Things move slower here—“pole pole” (slowly slowly) is a way of life. You’ll need to be flexible, proactive, and respectful of local customs, especially religious norms like modest dress. Be prepared for limited resources, open to unexpected changes, and ready to adapt to local ways.
Volunteering here is not always easy—but it is always rewarding.

🏝️ About Zanzibar
Zanzibar’s charm goes far beyond the classroom. After school, you can lose yourself in Stone Town’s winding alleys, relax at the beach, sip fresh sugarcane juice in Forodhani Gardens, or browse local street markets full of spices, crafts, and vibrant fabrics. On weekends, explore nearby beach villages, dive or snorkel among coral reefs, or take a trip to the legendary Addo Elephant Park or along the Garden Route.

Dress modestly when outside beach areas—cover shoulders and knees.
