    About the program

Officially, ecudation in Guatemala is free, but the reality is different for many families. In a country where more than 50 percent of the population lives in poverty, ensuring three meals a day is already a challenge, not to mention obtaining textbooks, teaching materials and transportation to school. Many children have to work at a young age to support the family income. Thanks to dedicated donors and initiators, foundations are emerging in various regions of the country to address this problem.

This is also the case with this volunteer project in Guatemala. Aiming to give children from poor families new perspectives for the future through holistic education, several initiatives were launched. These are non-governmental and non-profit organizations (NGOs) to provide families from the peripheral areas of Antigua access to school education. Through the involvement of many helpers, the initiatives have contributed to the development of the community structure over the years and now include pre and primary education, support programs and career choice support, hot meals in schools and kindergartens, medical care, clothing and sports and leisure activities.

Education is the cornerstone of every progress. Especially in regions with a high poverty rate, the lack of education and lack of perspectives leads to violence and crime. Help to give new hope to young Guatemalans and to significantly improve the situation of families in need.

    Typical day

On a typical work day, you will assist teachers with classes, help with homework, read with the children, offer assistance with other tasks, and help create lesson plans/ activities during the class and breaks.

In the afternoon, it is important to provide valuable educational activities for the kids that promote their own talents and creativity. These types of activities help to develop the children and keep them busy so that they can stay away from the streets. As a volunteer, you will also be asked to teach English, instruct computer courses, paint, dance, sing, do crafts with recycled materials, or play sports.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
