About the Program
Volunteering as an English teacher in Tanzania is a meaningful opportunity to support children in developing one of the most important skills for their future—communication. This program is based in Arusha and gives volunteers the chance to make a real difference while also gaining valuable personal experience, leadership skills, and cultural understanding.
Background of the Program.
Tanzania has made great progress in ensuring that most children have access to primary education. However, this success has also brought challenges, especially in terms of overcrowded classrooms and limited teaching resources. In many schools, one teacher may be responsible for a large number of students, making it difficult to provide individual support.
In addition, traditional teaching approaches often focus more on memorization than understanding. This is particularly noticeable in English learning, where students may be able to repeat words but struggle to use them in real-life situations. Since English becomes the main language of instruction in higher levels of education, this can create difficulties later on.
For many children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, improving their English skills can open doors to better education and employment opportunities in the future.
What You Will Do.
As a volunteer, you will support local teachers and help create a more engaging learning environment. Your role may include:
- Assisting with English lessons
- Encouraging students to practice speaking and listening
- Leading simple activities such as games, songs, and group work
- Helping students build confidence in using English
- Supporting classroom management alongside local teachers
You may also help with basic subjects depending on the needs of the school.
Placement.
Volunteers are placed at Joylistic Pre and Primary School, located in Arusha. The school provides education to children from early years up to primary level, typically between the ages of 3 and 14.
The school serves families from the surrounding community and works hard to provide a supportive learning environment despite limited resources. Volunteers play an important role in assisting teachers and introducing new, creative ways of learning that make lessons more interactive and enjoyable for the children.
Who Can Join.
No previous teaching experience is required. The most important qualities are:

As long as you are motivated and open-minded, you can make a valuable contribution.
Things to Keep in Mind.
Resources in some classrooms may be limited, so it is helpful if volunteers come prepared with ideas or simple teaching materials. Flexibility is also important, as each day may be different depending on the needs of the school.
Health & Travel Information.
Airport transfers can be arranged locally if needed, although they are not included in the program fee. It is recommended to organize return transport while in Tanzania for better flexibility.
Regarding vaccinations, a Yellow Fever certificate may be required depending on your travel history. To avoid any complications on arrival, it is advisable to have it prepared in advance.
Free Time.
The program runs from Monday to Friday, giving you weekends free to relax or explore. Many volunteers use this time to experience Tanzania’s unique attractions, including safaris, cultural visits, and local tours around Arusha.
