    About the program

The founder of Sambhali Trust, Govind Singh Rathore, wants to ’give back’ to the community of his father and grandfather. Setrawa’s inhabitants are faced with many challenges including water shortages and cultivating dry land but also the lacking access to education.

Children in the village attend government schools, that are faced with a lot of problems:

    •       Being understaffed
    •       Overcrowded classrooms
    •       Lack of appropriate material to make lessons work

Before the pandemic, Sambhali hosted volunteers in Setrawa who brought invaluable support to the local government school.

We would very much like to go back to supporting the government schools with volunteers to help the local teachers in English and Maths lessons. Volunteers are encouraged to improve the lesson quality by applying as many interactive teaching elements as possible and preparing workshops on general knowledge to extend the student’s knowledge.

In Setrawa, you will be able to explore rural life in the Thar Desert as well as Marwari culture. Govind turned his family home, Dev Bagh, into a Guesthouse in which tourists, volunteers and he will live in. Not only is the Guesthouse situated in a beautiful rural setting. Volunteers will have enough time to explore the surrounding Thar desert.

Volunteers coming to Setrawa should have a desire to live and work in a rural setting with basic amenities. There is no need to have prior experience in teaching, but certainly it would help your work in the schools. Volunteers should be able to improvise and be patient with their students as all of them are on various learning levels.

We will take care of your accommodation in Dev Bagh but it is your responsibility to take care of your flights, visa and vaccinations.

Your working day will start between 10am and 11am. You can prepare lesson for the day, write your day logs etc.
You will teach English, Maths and workshops on general knowledge at the local government school from 11am to 2.00pm. It is important that your teaching methods are as interactive as possible. Please focus on spoken English, everyday life problem solving in maths e.g. -working out prices at the market- and practical activities e.g. outdoor games, arts and crafts.
On top of that, it is essential for you to provide dental care (brushing) and hygiene check-ups for the pupils as many of them have no access to running water at home.
After lunch In the afternoon from 3pm to 5pm you will either support our Primary Education Center in Setrawa (a free education center for children as part of Sambhali's work -> find reference here https://www.sambhali.org/educational-projects) by teaching English and maths or teaching local children in the neighbourhood of the guest house.

The exact work will be determined with your application, so that we can make the best out of your stay.

In the Setrawa village you have many different shops where you can get anything that you need for your daily life as well as shop for clothes. You can also enjoy the beauty of the Thar Desert by going on a walk to the sand dunes. At Dev Bagh we have many comfortable spots where you can enjoy the quitness of the Desert by doing some Yoga and Meditation. In the Indian culture music plays an important role. For that reason you will be able to enjoy lots of Rajasthani music and dances. For a small additional fee you can go on a camel ride through the Desert organized by our neighbours. On the weekends you can take the local government bus, which only takes about 1,5 hours to go to Jodhpur to look around the city or visit the Fort or a 3 hours bus to Jaisalmer.

    Details on arrival

In General, volunteers can join throughout the year. The volunteers should stay at least for two months to adapt to the local working and living culture. We would very much appreciate volunteers coming in the time slot during April - September to help run the Setrawa projects while Govind, the Founder, will run the projects in Jodhpur. You will have regular correspondence daily.

Please understand that maintaining the guesthouse in Setrawa is quite effortful, restricting us from just having one volunteer for a short time. However, please don't hesitate to contact us if there is a possibility for your stay.
