    Teaching French in Morocco

    French is widely used among Morocco’s educated population and is considered the unofficial third language after Modern Standard Arabic and Berber (Amazigh). Despite its unofficial status, French plays a central role in commerce, finance, and the private sector. A strong command of the French language is essential for young Moroccans to develop employable skills and successfully enter the job market.

    As a volunteer on the Teaching French Project, you will work with children, teenagers, and adults. Your responsibilities may include leading French language classes, tutoring for school exams, supporting local teachers, assisting with homework, and organizing educational games and classroom activities. During school holidays, volunteers may also participate in summer camp programs.

    While formal teaching experience or qualifications are not required, you must be fluent in both spoken and written French. You’ll receive guidance from our local team and placement staff to help you succeed in your role.

    Daily Routine:

    • 09:00–12:00 – Morning teaching session at the placement

    • 12:00–14:00 – Lunch break at the host family

    • 15:00–17:00 – Afternoon teaching session or lesson preparation

    • 20:00 – Dinner with your host family

    After work and on weekends, volunteers have free time to relax or explore Rabat and other parts of Morocco.     Free-time activities

    After work and on weekends, volunteers have free time to relax or explore Rabat and other parts of Morocco. In Rabat, popular activities include visiting historical and cultural landmarks such as the Hassan Tower, Kasbah of the Udayas, the Archaeological Museum, and the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

    As a coastal city, Rabat also offers opportunities for outdoor and water activities. Volunteers can enjoy swimming or surfing at the downtown beach or try water sports like canoeing and jet skiing on the Bouregreg River or in the nearby city of Salé.

    Weekends or long weekends are perfect for traveling further across Morocco. Popular destinations include:

    • Marrakech, Fes, Meknes – historic imperial cities

    • Merzouga, Tinghir, Ouarzazate – desert landscapes and ancient kasbahs

    • Chefchaouen – the picturesque blue city

    • Volubilis – Roman ruins

    • Tangier – gateway to the Mediterranean

    Some volunteers also take the opportunity to explore southern Europe, including Gibraltar, Andalusia, southern Spain, and Portugal.

    Minimum Age: 18 years

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Airport Pickup at Sale Airport

    Once you've registered for the program, please arrange your flight to arrive at Rabat International Airport (RBA). Airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee.

    Upon arrival, a member of the local team will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Rabat or Salé, depending on the location of your placement. Your accommodation, which is covered by your Program Fee, includes the night before orientation begins.

    If you are already in Morocco before the start of your program, we can arrange a pick-up from Rabat Ville Train Station on the day before orientation.

    Accommodation

    Volunteers are hosted in local homestays, where they live with a Moroccan family and, in most cases, other volunteers. These families receive a portion of your program fee to cover accommodation and meals. Staying in a homestay offers a unique cultural immersion—an opportunity to experience everyday Moroccan life, enjoy traditional food, practice the local language (Darija – Moroccan Arabic), and take part in local customs and traditions.

    Accommodation typically includes a private or shared bedroom, depending on the homestay. Volunteers are advised to bring their own towels and personal toiletries. Moroccan homes usually feature a shared living space, where sdaders (traditional Moroccan couches) serve as both seating and dining areas.

    All homestays in Rabat provide Wi-Fi. For additional connectivity, volunteers can purchase a local SIM card with data for use in an unlocked mobile phone.

    Food & Beverages

    Moroccan cuisine is a rich blend of African, Arab, Moorish, and Berber influences. It combines Mediterranean fruits and vegetables with a variety of imported spices to create flavorful dishes. A typical Moroccan meal often begins with a selection of hot and cold salads, followed by a tagine (a slow-cooked stew), and is always accompanied by bread. Common dishes include lamb or chicken, as well as couscous served with meat and vegetables.

    As Morocco is a Muslim-majority country, pork and alcohol are prohibited in most households. In contrast, drinking mint tea is a cherished daily tradition.

    Volunteers are provided with three meals a day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—during their stay. While tap water is generally safe to drink, bottled water is widely available. Volunteers who prefer bottled water should budget around US$5 per week, assuming a daily intake of two liters.

    Program Orientation and Arrival Details

    Orientation takes place every Monday, year-round. Volunteers are required to arrive in Rabat on the Sunday before their chosen start date. Once registered, please book your flight to arrive at Rabat International Airport (RBA). Airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee.

    Upon arrival, a member of the local team will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Rabat or Salé, depending on your placement location. Accommodation is included in your Program Fee and covers the night before orientation begins.

    If you’re already traveling in Morocco before the start of your program, we can arrange a pick-up from Rabat Ville Train Station on the Sunday before orientation.

    Orientation Overview
