    Eco-Green School: A Beacon of Hope in Mbogolo village

    Eco-Green School is located in the heart of Mbogolo village, Malindi Constituency and currently serves 260 children aged between 6 and 17 years. These children come from a community that has long been deprived of access to education. They represent the first generation in their area to fully embrace learning — a powerful step forward in a region where education is viewed as a vital source of hope and the key to lasting change.

    The surrounding community is semi-illiterate, with most residents engaged in subsistence farming, casual labor, and motorbike taxi services as their primary means of livelihood.

    School Location and Transport

    The school is situated in a village approximately 10 kilometers from the city center, where the volunteer house is located. Volunteers commute to and from the school Monday through Friday. Transport options include:

    • Motorbike taxis: Approx. €1.50 per day

    • Bicycles

    • Walking: Approx. 1 hour 20 minutes

    • Running: Approx. 1 hour

    School Schedule and Activities

    The school operates Monday to Friday, following a structured timetable for lessons and other enriching activities. Beyond classroom teaching, the school offers a lively and engaging environment that nurtures both academic and personal development.

    Core Activities Include:

    • Teaching English, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Hygiene & Nutrition, Music, and Sports

    • Participating in community-based initiatives

    • Youth mentorship programs

    Volunteer Accommodation

    Volunteers reside in a shared house located within the city, just a 10-minute walk from the beach and close to all major social amenities. The house is situated in a safe, residential neighborhood, offering a warm and homely atmosphere.

    Accommodation Features:

    • Three shared bedrooms (separated by gender) with beds, bedding, mosquito nets, and basic storage

    • A spacious living room with sofas, a dining table, and a TV

    • A modern, fully equipped kitchen — often the heart of the home where food and culture come together

    • Reliable electricity and running water (with occasional short outages)

    • Backup water supply for rare instances of water shortages (which may last up to two days)

    The volunteer house is more than just a place to stay — it’s where friendships are formed, cultures are exchanged, and lifelong memories are created. Volunteers from all over the world come together to live, work, and grow as a family by design.

    The school day at Eco-Green begins early to ensure the children receive the support they need — especially since most students do not have a conducive learning environment at home.

    • 7:30 AM – The day starts with homework checks and revision sessions. This early start helps reinforce lessons and ensures no child falls behind.

    • 8:00 AM – Formal classes begin.

    • 9:15 AM – Short morning break (10 minutes).

    • 10:30 AM – Mid-morning break (20 minutes).

    • 12:00 PM – Lunch break.

    • 3:30 PM – Games and sports activities.

    • 4:00 PM – End of the school day.

    Extracurricular Activities & Sports

    Throughout the week, students engage in a variety of extracurricular activities — including music, drama, art, and cultural learning. One of the highlights of the school’s extracurricular calendar is competitive sports. These are organized at the regional and national levels by the government, with schools from across the area participating in friendly but spirited competitions in selected sports.

    Meals at School

    Volunteers are provided with break and lunch meals at school.  These shared meals are not just nourishing; they’re also a moment of connection and community among the school staff and volunteers.  This is where culture is integrated through interesting stories that navigate through history, modernity and socialization.


    After Class sports

    At the end of the  day, the school staff enjoy volley ball and other sports together with the young learners, where they compete in different teams, and engage in light banter and laughter.  This moment is cherished especially by the learners and it is one of the best way to wind up the day enjoying the calmness of the village and sports.

    Cultural Immersion: Living in the Village

    To better understand the community, volunteers are invited to spend two days living with local families in a nearby village. During this time, you’ll experience life without electricity or running water a humbling and eye-opening way to connect with the children and the wider community on a deeper level.

    Volunteer Accommodation in Malindi

    The volunteer house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Malindi town, offering both comfort and security. It’s conveniently positioned just 10 kilometers from the beach and within easy reach of all essential amenities  including supermarkets, local markets, banks, hospitals, police stations, clubs, and sports centers.

    Comfortable & Homely Living

    The house is equipped with both electricity and running water. While occasional power or water interruptions may occur, they are usually short-lived and manageable.

    Facilities include:

    • Bathroom: Functional with a cold-water shower (though the water is naturally warm due to the coastal heat) and a flushing toilet.

    • Living & Dining Area: A spacious common room featuring a dining table, comfortable sofa set (divani), and a television — perfect for relaxing or working during your free time.

    • Kitchen: Fully equipped with basic appliances, cooking utensils, and a variety of spices. It's the heart of the house — a place where volunteers bond over cooking and shared meals.

    Bedrooms

    There are three shared bedrooms, separated by gender. Each room includes:

    • Beds with clean bedding

    • Mosquito nets for protection

    • Simple storage units (cardboards) for personal belongings

    Food & Beverages

    Breakfast typically includes tea or coffee, bread, donuts or mandazi, eggs, and fresh fruit.

    Lunch is provided at the school.

    Dinner features a variety of staples such as rice, chapati, ugali, or pasta, served with meat, chicken, vegetables, and seasonal fruits like bananas, mangoes, avocados, pineapples, papayas, oranges, and watermelons.

    Drinking water and light snacks such as nuts and biscuits are always available.

    Dietary Needs

    Vegetarian options are fully catered for, and special dietary requirements are accommodated to ensure everyone is well taken care of.

    Kitchen Routine

    Volunteers prepare their own meals and share responsibility for cleaning the kitchen. A duty roster is organized so everyone participates equally.

    On special occasions, dinner may be served outdoors, and sometimes breakfast is enjoyed on the beach.

    Cultural Exchange

    Volunteers are encouraged to bring traditional recipes from their home countries to share during cultural nights — making mealtime a fun and delicious way to connect and celebrate diversity.

    Details on arrival

    The volunteers can join the programme throughout the year and can join for minimum four weeks, and in this case, they will work as teacher assistant and will not assume the main role. 

    • The preferred arrival days are weekends to help the volunteer settle down and the preferred time is either in the morning or in the afternoon. This allows for the host to settle the volunteer with the comfort of time without straining to rush.
    • Dates are open. However, upon arrival the volunteers go through induction where they get all information regarding the school and are shown around to orient themselves. 
    • After that they visit different lessons to see how lessons are administered to familiarize with the children and the environment
    • They choose subjects that they are comfortable with and are given the textbooks and teaching guides to follow.  The first day the volunteer will work as an assistant until confident to run the class alone.
    • The volunteers are encouraged to use their skills and creativity whilst teaching to the benefit of the learners. They are also encouraged to keep an open mind in order to understand different perspectives.
