This unique volunteer project in Mzuzu, Malawi uses tennis and table tennis as powerful tools to educate and empower youth. Through sport, Tennis Kids Malawi promotes physical health, life skills, social development, and personal growth for children and young adults.

The organization actively fosters the growth of table tennis and lawn tennis by creating structured coaching programs, competitive leagues, and training opportunities for athletes, coaches, administrators, and officials — from beginner to international levels.

    Core Principles:

    • Create an inclusive environment for all ages and skill levels to develop tennis and table tennis, supporting physical health and essential life skills

    • Raise the standard of play and promote these sports across the Northern region, aiming to compete locally, regionally, and internationally

    • Make tennis and table tennis the most widely played grassroots sports in Mzuzu

    • Deliver sustainable, progressive, and professional coaching programs in schools and youth organizations

    👟🎾Volunteer Activities

    Coaching

    Coaching Workshops
Annual workshops train and upskill local coaches, teachers, and volunteers to ensure high-quality, sustainable coaching

    School League Tournaments
Tennis Kids runs school leagues involving 11 local schools, where players compete and coaches train weekly, spotting new talent

    HIV/AIDS Awareness Tournaments
Special tournaments raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, offering testing, counseling, and promoting positive health behaviors through sport

    Championship Competitions
Regional and national tournaments give youth the chance to test their skills, compete, and socialize with peers from across Malawi

Airport Pickup at Mzuzu

Lilongwe Airport transfer (one way private vehicle) - $160

Daily Transport $25 p/week

Direct transfer:
We will gladly pick you up from the airport in Lilongwe for the additional cost of 160 USD. This is a local payment and needs to be paid directly to our coordinator. These costs can be shared if there are more volunteers arriving on the same day, so with 2 people it will be 75 USD per person, with 4 only 37.50 USD per person. Mzuzu is 340 km from the international airport in Lilongwe, making it quite a trip to pick you up, but we gladly arrange it for you.

Own transport Malawi:
As Malawi is such a friendly and relatively easy country to travel in, public transport is another option to arrange your own airport pick up with accommodation in Lilongwe, and to stay over before taking a bus to Mzuzu. We gladly help you with planning this and giving you free advice.

Own transport via Tanzania:
As the flights to Lilongwe can unfortunately be quite expensive, we suggest looking at the alternative to fly to Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, offering cheaper flights and to take a bus to Mzuzu. Buses are available on a daily basis and can take 16-20 hours to get to Mzuzu.

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay with one of our selected host families within walking distance of Tennis Kids, making it very easy to get to work and return home.

You’ll be accommodated in a comfortable family home featuring:

  • 2 bedrooms (with 2 and 3 beds respectively)

  • A private bathroom for volunteers with a western toilet and warm shower

  • Shared use of the dining room, lounge with TV, and a large garden

Depending on how busy it is, you may share a room with other volunteers. It’s a welcoming environment where you’ll quickly feel at home!

Food & Beverages

You’ll be served 3 local meals a day, freshly prepared for you by your host family. Meals are typically made up of:

  • Rice, pasta, or nsima (a traditional maize meal porridge)

  • Fish, vegetables, and various meats

Breakfast usually consists of porridge or bread with coffee or tea.
Lunches are light and simple, while dinners are full, home-cooked meals.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy traditional Malawian cuisine as part of your cultural immersion!
