Details on arrival
To ensure the best experience for both the volunteer and the host family, we offer flexible start dates throughout the year.
Frequency: Programs typically begin every Monday of the month.
Duration: Minimum stay is 1 week, though we highly recommend 2–4 weeks to build a genuine bond with the family and the horses.
Best Time to Visit: While the program runs year-round, the most comfortable months are September to May . During the monsoon season (June–August), volunteers should be prepared for tropical rain and more focus on indoor stable improvements.
We ensure every volunteer feels safe and supported from the moment they land in Nepal.
1. Arrival in Kathmandu: Most volunteers will arrive via Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). A member of our team will meet you at the airport holding a "Good Karma" sign and transfer you to your initial accommodation in Kathmandu.
2. In-Country Orientation: Before heading to Sauraha, you will participate in a comprehensive orientation. This includes:
Cultural Sensitivity: Basics of Nepali etiquette and Tharu culture.
Safety & Health: Tips for staying healthy in the Terai and safety around the animals.
Project Briefing: A detailed look at the family’s specific needs and the current health status of the horses.
3. Transfer to Sauraha (Chitwan): We will arrange your transport from Kathmandu to Sauraha. You can choose between:
Tourist Bus: A scenic 6–7 hour journey through the hills and along the Trishuli River.
4. Meeting Your Host Family: Upon arrival in Sauraha, you will be introduced to the family and your equine companions. We will walk you through the farm, show you your living quarters, and share your first traditional meal together to start your volunteering journey on a high note.
Preparation ChecklistVisa: Available on arrival at the airport in Kathmandu.
Insurance: Volunteers must have travel insurance that covers volunteer activities.
Clothing: Lightweight, breathable clothes for the Terai heat, and sturdy boots for working in the stables.
