Experience Simple and Rewarding Camp Life
Imagine waking up to the sound of gentle waves and the cool ocean breeze.
Life at the beach camp is rustic yet rewarding. You'll be living in close quarters with nature, sharing and preparing meals together in a basic open-air kitchen, fostering a strong sense of community and camaraderie. Even the chores, like cleaning the camp or collecting rainwater, become an opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of sustainable living.
The different surveying and monitoring tasks to be completed include (amongst others):
- Turtle Workshop – Triangulation and relocation practice
- Nightly beach patrols for nesting turtles.
- The relocation of any nests not laid on Turtle Bay
- The monitoring of hatching turtle nests on Turtle Bay
- Coral ecology and education
- Casual observations - Depending on the time of year there may be more of a focus on nesting or hatching turtles as well as additional specific research projects. However, nightly patrols will continue April - September
There are also several opportunities to listen to and be involved in presentations about the marine environment and the species found around the island.
Occasionally we will also receive visits to our Research Station from external guests, and volunteers are expected to assist with these as required.
Snorkeling forms a core activity of camp life and you will likely be spending at least 1-2 hours a day in the water.
As your nights may be spent patrolling, mornings are free and leisurely. Afternoons are a mixture of educational activities and camp activities. Once you've signed on as a turtle volunteer, you will receive a detailed guide along with a packing list.
