    About the program

Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure where your passion for wildlife can truly make a difference? Imagine spending your days directly contributing to the well-being of incredible animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in beautiful West Java. Our wildlife rescue volunteering program offers a unique and deeply rewarding experience, placing you right at the heart of conservation efforts.

At this well-established centre, operating for over 20 years, we provide a vital sanctuary for animals that have nowhere else to go. Many arrive in dire condition, often unable to be released back into the wild due to health or behavioural issues caused by their past. For these resilient creatures, the centre becomes their forever home, and your compassion helps make that home the best it can be. This isn't just about animal care; it's about providing a second chance at a life of dignity. Plus, you'll be joining a truly ethical project that employs over 30 dedicated staff members from the local village, directly supporting the community.

Your Role as an Animal Care Volunteer

As a volunteer, you'll get an unparalleled opportunity to shadow experienced animal keepers and dive into the full spectrum of daily wildlife care. Each day brings new experiences with different animals, offering a comprehensive look at life at the centre.

You'll be hands-on with essential tasks like:

    • Food preparation and feeding: Ensuring each animal receives the tailored nutrition they need.
    • Enclosure cleaning: Maintaining clean, healthy environments crucial for their well-being.
    • Animal enrichment activities: This is where your creativity truly shines! You'll prepare and implement stimulating toys, puzzles, and activities designed specifically for each species. These enrichments are vital for maintaining the animals' physical and mental health, providing crucial stimulation, and even helping them relearn natural behaviours lost due to their past.

You'll also get fantastic opportunities to spend time at the vet clinic, observing medical procedures, learning about animal health, and asking questions directly to the veterinary team. Depending on the center's needs, you might even participate in structured animal observations or assist with building and developing new enclosures.

    Social Impact of this project

The Java Wildlife Rescue Centre creates significant long-term social impact through various initiatives:

    • Rehabilitating Endangered Wildlife: It provides vital sanctuary and care for wild animals rescued from illegal trade, many arriving in critical condition.
    • Releases to Replenish Wild Populations: Successfully rehabilitated animals are released back into their natural habitats, directly boosting endangered wildlife populations.
    • Conservation Breeding Programs: The centre runs crucial breeding programs for native species facing extinction, such as the critically endangered Javan Green Magpie, often in collaboration with international partners.
    • Wildlife Learning Centre: It actively educates the local community and international volunteers/interns about the value and proper care of wild animals, aiding broader conservation efforts.
    • Local Employment and Livelihood: The centre directly contributes to the local economy and provides sustainable livelihoods by employing over 30 staff members from the adjoining village.

This is more than just volunteering; it's a chance to immerse yourself in the world of wildlife conservation, gain invaluable hands-on experience, and leave each day knowing you've made a tangible difference in the lives of these amazing creatures and the local community.
