Make a meaningful difference protecting endangered sea turtles on the small but breathtaking island of Nusa Penida, Indonesia. Located off the southeastern coast of Bali, Nusa Penida is known for its dramatic cliffs, clear waters, and vibrant marine ecosystems, creating an inspiring setting for conservation focused volunteers.
You will directly support the preservation of endangered Hawksbill and Green Sea turtles by helping to care for, rehabilitate, and release them back into their natural habitat. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to meaningful marine conservation efforts while enjoying life on a remote island rich in natural beauty and cultural charm.
Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to increase the population of endangered sea turtles in Indonesia. These species face significant threats from pollution, habitat degradation, and human activity. Volunteers assist with key conservation efforts including caring for injured turtles, protecting eggs, supporting hatchlings, and reducing plastic waste through regular environmental clean ups. Your contribution directly supports the long term sustainability of the conservation center.
As a Sea Turtle Conservation volunteer in Nusa Penida, your duties will be practical and hands on:
- Caring for Turtles: Feeding turtles, cleaning tanks, and supporting rehabilitation activities that help them regain natural behaviors, such as learning to hunt for fish.
- Conservation Support: Assisting with egg collection, monitoring hatchlings, and helping prepare turtles for safe release into the ocean.
- Center Maintenance: Supporting the upkeep of the sanctuary through cleaning, repairing structures, and maintaining equipment essential for daily operations.
- Environmental Protection: Joining regular beach clean ups and community area cleaning to minimize plastic waste that poses a threat to marine life.
Volunteers collaborate directly with local conservation staff, experienced coordinators, and other international volunteers. The team provides training, daily guidance, and cultural insight while ensuring that all work aligns with responsible and ethical conservation practices.
No special equipment is required for this project. All tools and supplies needed for turtle care and conservation activities are provided on site. Volunteers should simply bring practical items for outdoor work such as comfortable clothing, sunscreen, closed toe shoes, and a reusable water bottle.
No previous experience is necessary. A passion for the environment, a willingness to be outdoors, and an enthusiasm for contributing to marine protection make this project especially rewarding.
Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted experience includes accommodation in a dormitory style volunteer house on Nusa Penida and three meals each day. Transport to and from the conservation site is also provided. Volunteers gain hands on conservation experience, connect with other global travelers, and spend weekends exploring the island’s beaches, cliffside lookouts, and rich marine environment. The program operates year round and offers a highly supportive, immersive experience that allows you to contribute to meaningful environmental impact in one of Indonesia’s most remarkable locations.
