    About the program

Especially during the pandemic, it became clear just how important extra help is in hospitals – and that’s why your willingness to volunteer is so valuable! Your support will make a real difference, not only for the patients but also for the medical staff who are working around the clock.

Where you’ll be placed depends on your background. If you’re a medical student or have some experience in the healthcare field, you can volunteer in a hospital. If you don’t have any medical experience, no worries! You can still be a huge help in medical centers, private clinics, or rehab centers, where you’ll support with tasks like assisting patients or helping out with general care.

Volunteering abroad is a great opportunity to see how hospitals work in a different country, and you’ll get the chance to learn about healthcare from an international perspective. It’s also a great way to meet new people and experience a different culture. Not only will you gain professional experience, but you’ll also get to know Greece in a much more authentic way than as just a tourist. It’s a win-win: you’ll be helping others while getting valuable experience that can shape your personal and professional growth!

    Typical day

Your tasks as a volunteer vary depending on your interests and previous knowledge: For example, you help patients move around the hospital and make their daily lives easier by talking to them and engaging with them.

In addition to dealing with the patients, you take on other simple tasks such as running small errands or cleaning and tidying up. Depending on your professional experience, you may also be responsible for monitoring the patients' condition like taking their temperature, pulse, respiration, etc. You will also be responsible for the care of the patients.

Apart from that, you don't need any previous medical experience - the important thing is that you are willing to work hard and are a team player. You should also have a well-groomed appearance. However, there is no specific dress code - we recommend comfortable shoes / trainers as you will be on your feet all day. A white coat is provided.

You will work six hours a day for five days. The exact working hours will be discussed on site. In the first days there will be a training session to familiarise you with your work and your new environment. In general, the project tries to give you an overview of what it is like to work in a hospital, to gain experience in the different areas there and to get to know the daily routine.

    Free-time activities

You certainly won't get bored on Crete, the island of the gods. Make sure you take time after your project work to explore Greece's largest island.

Heraklion, Crete's capital, is about twelve kilometers away from your project location. Highlights of the city are definitely its beautiful Venetian harbour, the historic old town and the sightseeing attraction on Crete par excellence: the Palace of Knossos. There you will learn about the most famous myths surrounding the Minotaur, discover the labyrinth and learn more about the history of the Ionian civilisation. By the way: For volunteers under 25 years of age, the entrance to the palace is free of charge. For more information, please contact our project team.

You want to soak up even more historical knowledge? Then head to the archaeological museum in Heraklion. The museum is full of finds from the Minoan era. This period is considered the birth of European culture.

You can take another city trip to Chania. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities on the island with its Venetian harbour, a lighthouse, the ancient old town and the Hasan Pasha Mosque.

Crete is also an ideal place for nature lovers with its breathtaking nature, high mountains and deep gorges. The Samaria Gorge is one of the largest gorges in Europe and definitely an ideal place to go hiking in Crete. Equally exciting for hiking is Crete's second largest mountain, Pachnes. It is located in the white mountains and impresses with its bizarre lunar landscape.

If you prefer the beach, Crete will not disappoint you. Visit Preveli Beach, for example. The beach is a popular photo motive because a heart-shaped rock juts out of the water. Another special feature is the beach at Elafonisi. Here, turquoise water meets pink sand. Definitely a must-see!

    On-site Services

The primary, cost-generating tasks of our work lie in the preparation, mediation and implementation of non-profit volunteer work and internships abroad, as well as the development of targeted concepts.

We use a portion of the participation costs of volunteers specifically for projects for which RGV acts as the responsible organization, such as the street children project in Ghana. The direct financial support of all other admission projects, such as schools and kindergartens, is not the main focus of our charitable work. Instead, we focus on supporting local communities sustainably with the help of our volunteers and promoting intercultural exchange.

    Included in the price:

    • Orientation program with the local team
    • Support and guidance from the local team
    • RGV 24-hour emergency number
    • Airport transfer on the agreed arrival and departure day
    • Accommodation in a volunteer apartment
    • Catering: breakfast

    Accommodation

During your placement, you will live in one of the volunteer flats on site. The flat you stay in depends on how many volunteers are participating in the project and how long you will be there.

Each flat can accommodate up to four volunteers. All flats are fully furnished, have a modern bathroom and are equipped with all kitchen utensils, air conditioning and WiFi. Towels and bed linen are also provided. However, you will have to take care of the cleanliness of the rooms yourself. The accommodation is also divided according to gender, unless there is a request for couples.

Depending on your accommodation, you can either get to your project location by bus or on foot. Depending on your project in Crete, it will take you about 5-30 minutes. If you need to use the bus to get to your project site, you can request a bus ticket from the local team (approx. 60€).

Supermarkets, restaurants, bars and other shops are nearby. The beach is also not far away and invites you to swim and relax. Occasionally, there are social events or joint excursions that you can take part in.

The nearest town, Hersonissos, is about 3 km away and can be easily reached by bus. Heraklion is also only 12 km away and can be easily visited by bus.
