    About the program

This project is carried out by a non-profit organization that strives to protect the rich biodiversity in Paraguay. They do this through scientific research and community outreach. The project is located in the country's center very close to the river Neembucu, a huge and important river, which is part of a region that is a real hotspot for nature and wildlife research as well as eco tourism. This large stream feeds into the impressive Rio Paraguay and is home to stunning tourist attractions. Many of the species in this region are only native to this area, which makes it a unique place to study local flora and fauna. Many new species have already been discovered by the volunteer project, and there could still be more to identify.

In Paraguay, there is a constant concern about the continuous destruction of nature. This is due to expanding agricultural activities, like cattle breeding and soya production. Land purchased from organizations focused on conservation helps to protect nature and wildlife by providing protected corridors, which link remaining pieces of original vegetation.

    Typical day

This wildlife conservation initiative enables volunteers to engage in a range of diverse tasks. Upon arrival, you will receive a brief introduction in the different areas. Depending on the duration of your stay, you may assist in one or multiple areas at the project site. Options include research, museum and library work, as well as educational activities with children from local schools and other community members. The organization boasts its own museum and library, recognized as some of the best-equipped facilities in the entire nation!

    Monkey Project:

The objective of this initiative is to establish long-term studies focusing on the sociology, dietary and sleeping habits, demographics, ecology, and natural habitats of Capuchin and Howler Monkeys. Working alongside an onsite primatologist, you will gain insights into the effects of urban environments on wild primates. You will learn how to set up camera traps while documenting and analyzing the vocalizations of the primates. This project presents an exceptional opportunity to acquire valuable experience living and working at a field research site dedicated to the study of wild primates.

    Reptile and Amphibian Survey:

This project provides you with the chance to observe and study reptiles and amphibians in their natural environments. Numerous vividly colored species of reptiles and amphibians can be found here. The Rio Paraguay, located just two blocks from the research center, is home to a variety of fish, frogs, snakes, and insects – some of which remain undiscovered! You will learn how to conduct research on amphibians and other animals inhabiting the vicinity of the water. As a volunteer in this area, you will set up traps, embark on nocturnal explorations, and gather data on many intriguing creatures.

    Museum and Education:

The volunteer project operates its own Fauna-Museum, recognized as the second best of its type in Paraguay, following the National Museum located in the capital, Asunción. This museum is linked to one of the largest libraries in the nation, housing hundreds of thousands of journals and books, both in electronic and physical formats. As a volunteer, you will assist in maintaining the museum and its databases in an orderly and current state. Additionally, you will aid in presenting exhibitions to visitors and may have the opportunity to design and create new educational materials, posters, and displays.

    Outreach:

If you possess adequate Spanish language skills, you can also contribute to a community outreach initiative. The volunteer project entails working within communities near the research center and delivering environmental education to both adults and children. Frequently, local schools request additional educational sessions that enable children to learn about various species, sustainability, the environment, and ecological responsibility.

Please be aware that not all projects are available throughout the year. Many of these tasks necessitate a good level of physical fitness and may require extensive walking. It is crucial that you maintain good physical health.

Note: The tasks may differ. They are influenced by factors such as the number of volunteers, the season, the current needs of the project, and individual motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully engaged in all of these tasks.

The region where this volunteer project is placed is one of the most popular touristic destinations in Paraguay. The Nature is exuberant in the eyes of every visitor. The immense wetlands with animal and plant life markedly different from other regions serve to reinforce the charm of an area of unparalleled beauty.  Flowing rivers, such as Paraná and Paraguay, with unique places for relaxing on beaches, historical sites such as the Jesuits ruins of Humaitá, and a very good gastronomy call those who wish a healthy distraction. Its picturesque villages keep their colonial style buildings intact, with mud and stacking constructions that continue to show all the beauty of the architecture of previous centuries.
