    About the program

the surroundings and the locations where We are working  is in a conservation concession area of 177ha designated for conservation by the Peruvian government and the station facilities is  in a private land of 8ha. The concession is located in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve, bordering the Madre de Dios River. We are located at 1 hour by boat of the city Puerto Maldonado, Peru. We are situated at the right margin, downstream of the river Madre de Dios.  The ecosystem type is a floodplain forest.

Interns are individuals who can work independently and carry out their own activities during their internship. These are people who need to gain experience abroad, complete a project, thesis, or report for university.

We have identified two types of internships:
    - Immersive conservation internships abroad: for those who need international experience abroad, with a minimum duration of 2 weeks.
During this time, you will be able to learn how we study and protect the forest by joining us in our activities and projects.

    - Conservation and research internships: for those who need to complete a research project, thesis, or report for university, with a minimum duration of 1 month.

You do not need prior experience or a specific academic or university background to join us; everyone is welcome. This is because you will gain your initial field experience with us—or strengthen existing skills if you already have some. It all depends on the type of internship you need; we tailor the experience to your requirements.

For example: As an long term intern, you will primarily focus on your research project.

    - The first week will be used to familiarize yourself with the forest, its trails, and define your project. To save time, we can discuss your project profile before your arrival.

    - By the second week at the latest, you should have your proposal ready and prepare an oral presentation before beginning to collect your data in the field.

-You will use your last week to gather preliminary results and give an oral presentation of your findings.

In parallel, you will also participate in our main station activities, learn about flora and fauna monitoring, and support other projects led by local and international interns and students.

Regarding research topics, you could choose something related to our current activities or any other subject that interests you and is feasible to carry out. The idea is for you to handle the internship yourself, from the initial proposal through data collection and analysis. You can work with birds, amphibians, monkeys, plants, fungi, insects, vegetation, etc., or even replicate an existing project—but executed by you. We have a database of various reports and publications that can help give you some ideas.

From the beginning, we will guide you, helping you with your objectives, the internship program, the project, data collection, and evaluating your work for the university. We provide basic field equipment for your project (GPS, binoculars, stereoscope, microscope, etc.), but you are responsible for any personal (headlamp, rubber boots, camera, etc.) or specialized equipment.

During your stay, you may have the opportunity to arrange visits to nearby attractions such as the  Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre or Lake Sandoval. These are third-party tours and are not operated by the station. Depending on availability, we can help you organise these tours during your time here. These tours and excursions have an additional cost. Please note that tours cannot always be guaranteed, as availability can vary depending on the season, tour operators, and other circumstances.

    Accommodation

Life at the Station is communal and shared. We normally have around 24 people living on the base, although this number can vary depending on the time of year.

Accommodation is provided in shared bungalows, with a maximum of four people per bungalow. Each bungalow has its own private toilet and shower. Bungalows are generally shared with people of the same gender or, when applicable, with people who are travelling together. We provide clean bed sheets and mosquito nets, so you do not need to bring your own. Please note that our showers only have cold water, as there is no hot water available at the station.

Each bungalow has electricity and charging facilities. Peru generally uses Type A and Type C plugs, so we recommend bringing a suitable adapter if your devices use a different plug type. As we all share the station, we ask everyone to help keep the bungalows and common areas clean and tidy and to be considerate of the people you are sharing with.

Private accommodation is not normally available. However, depending on availability, we may be able to arrange a more private room for an additional cost. Please ask us about this if it is something you would prefer.

    Details on arrival

You can find us in the Madre de Dios region, Peru. The station is located about one hour from the city of Puerto Maldonado. You can arrive to Puerto Maldonado by plane (approximately 1.5 hours from Lima, or 60min from Cusco) or by night bus, which is a good alternative when you are travelling from or to Cusco and Arequipa.

IMPORTANT: If you have a connecting flight in Lima, remember to collect your checked luggage and recheck it in Lima for your onward flight to Puerto Maldonado.

Please note that we have fixed boat schedules:

    ●      On Wednesdays, the boat leaves the station in the morning to Puerto Maldonado. The boat returns the same day from Puerto Maldonado to the station at around 3 p.m.

    ●      On weekends, the boat leaves the station on Saturday morning to Puerto Maldonado. On Sunday the boat returns from Puerto Maldonado towards the station at around 3 p.m.

This means that our departure days are on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and entries are on Wednesday and Sunday.

If you are planning a departure flight on a Wednesday or Saturday, we recommend booking it for after 12 p.m.

Prior to your arrival date, we will coordinate with you at what time exactly you need to be at which port, as ports or exact times may slightly change from day to day.

If you need to stay overnight in Puerto Maldonado before travelling to the station, we can recommend a few hostels and accommodation options in the city. If you choose to stay at one of our recommended accommodations, we can more easily arrange a taxi pick-up on the day you travel towards the station, taking you from your accommodation to the port.
