    About the program

What can a volunteer do in Bardiya ?
The volunteer role as a Women's Empowerment and Ecotourism Mentor in the Bardiya community homestays is designed to foster economic and social self-reliance among the local Tharu women. The core responsibility involves professionalizing the homestay business through practical skill-building workshops. This includes teaching advanced hospitality, enhancing customer service skills, and establishing high standards for hygiene to directly increase guest satisfaction and revenue. A significant focus is placed on breaking down communication barriers and increasing business independence: the volunteer will teach conversational English tailored to guest interactions and introduce essential digital literacy skills, such as using basic smartphone applications for online communication, bookings, and maintaining a simple financial ledger.

Furthermore, the role is pivotal in promoting diverse and sustainable income generation. The volunteer will facilitate sessions on financial literacy—covering fundamental concepts of saving, budgeting, and simple business accounting. This is coupled with mentorship on entrepreneurship, helping the women develop, market, and price authentic cultural experiences and local handicrafts like Tharu cooking classes or traditional dance performances, thus diversifying their income stream beyond just lodging and food. Crucially, this position also addresses social empowerment by organizing culturally sensitive, informal discussions on vital life skills, including women's health, hygiene, and nutrition, alongside providing foundational knowledge on legal rights related to business and property ownership, all aimed at boosting their self-confidence and their capacity to make informed decisions for themselves and their families. Finally, the volunteer will collaborate with the homestay operators to integrate eco-friendly practices like proper waste management and energy conservation, positioning the community as a leader in sustainable ecotourism linked to the conservation of Bardiya National Park.

     Bardiya Community Homestay
The establishment of Bardiya Community Homestay marked a turning point. What began as a modest initiative to support families became a powerful movement that reshaped local perspectives. Tourism has created jobs for youth, empowered women through hospitality, and offered an alternative income source that reduced pressure on forests. Most importantly, it has transformed wildlife from a threat into a shared responsibility encouraging locals to protect the park and its biodiversity with pride. Today, Bardiya is where the roar of a tiger across the grasslands meets the laughter of locals in village courtyards, where farming and festivals thrive alongside forests and wildlife. Choosing Bardiya means joining this journey supporting women’s empowerment, safeguarding traditions, and helping a community turn challenge into opportunity.

    Typical day

Morning (7:00 AM – 10:30 AM): Cultural Immersion and Planning
    • 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: Start with the Hosts: The day often begins by sharing a traditional Nepali breakfast *(Dal Bhat or similar) with the host family/homestay operators. This is a key time for informal conversational English practice and discussing the day's guest arrivals, departures, or special requests.

    • 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM: Lesson Preparation: Review or finalize materials for the day’s workshops. This might involve preparing simple English flashcards, visual aids for a hygiene lesson, or an easy-to-understand budgeting sheet.

    • 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Homestay Observation & Support: Observe the morning routine of the homestay. This is a hands-on opportunity to provide feedback on presentation, observe sustainable practices, or assist with a guest check-out, using the moment to coach the women on professional guest communication.

    Mid-day (10:30 AM – 2:00 PM): Structured Workshop

    • 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Empowerment Workshop: Conduct a dedicated two-hour session for the women of the homestay cooperative or local community. The topic rotates daily:

      • Monday: Conversational English/Hospitality Skills.

      • Tuesday: Financial Literacy/Basic Bookkeeping.

      • Wednesday: Ecotourism & Waste Management Training.

      • Thursday: Tharu Craft or Experience Development (e.g., pricing local tours).

      • Friday: Women's Health and Rights Discussion.

    • 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Lunch & Reflection: Share a community lunch with the participants. This serves as an informal space to answer lingering questions from the workshop and build personal rapport.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Fieldwork and One-on-One Mentoring

    • 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Project Development & Mentoring: Work on specific business development projects. This might involve:

      • Helping a woman set up a basic online profile for the homestay on a platform they are familiar with.

      • Going with a group to a local market to discuss product pricing and sales techniques for their handicrafts.

      • Drafting simple, culturally appropriate marketing messages or creating a guest feedback form.

    • 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Community Check-in: Meet with the local coordinator or a community leader to report on the week’s progress, discuss any cultural challenges encountered, and plan the agenda for the following week to ensure local alignment and sustainability of the efforts.

Evening (5:00 PM onwards): Cultural Exchange and Free Time

    • 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Free Time/Language Study: Time for personal rest, reflection, or Nepali language study.

    • 7:00 PM Onwards: Dinner and Cultural Exchange: Participate in the evening meal. This is a precious time for organic cultural exchange—answering questions about the volunteer's home country, learning more about Tharu traditions, or simply helping with the evening preparations as part of the family.

Weekends (Saturday & Sunday): Dedicated time for exploring Bardiya National Park, meeting other community members, or joining local festivals and gatherings.
