    Sobre el programa

This dynamic and highly specialized programme is specifically structured to ignite economic growth and foster financial education among micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses across the regions of San Ramón and Naranjo in the vibrant Alajuela Province of Costa Rica. Volunteers have the distinct opportunity to work in a collaborative environment where local innovation seamlessly meets traditional community values, directly contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by targeting the eradication of poverty (SDG 1), enhancing quality education (SDG 4), and promoting decent work and sustained economic growth (SDG 8).

Collaboration is key, as the programme partners with a diverse range of recognized local institutions, including financial service cooperatives, municipal economic development offices, university business departments, and private consulting groups. These partnerships ensure that the volunteer support is strategic, impactful, and reaches the individuals who need it most to stabilize and grow their ventures.

Your role as a volunteer is intensely focused on financial and administrative support. One of the main responsibilities is the direct assistance in developing viable and sustainable business plans. This involves sitting down with local entrepreneurs, understanding their business concepts, and helping them structure formal plans that can attract low-interest financial services and guide long-term stability.

Another critical component is conducting training in financial literacy. Many small business owners lack formal training in basic accounting, budgeting, and financial management. Volunteers design and lead workshops to improve their comprehension of essential financial concepts, enabling entrepreneurs to better manage cash flow, understand profit margins, and make informed decisions about loan management. This educational element is vital for transitioning small, informal businesses into structured, sustainable enterprises.

Beyond direct training, you will provide essential administrative and accounting support to partner organizations. This can include optimizing internal financial processes, assisting with file management, and implementing efficiency measures that strengthen the overall management of the local entities, such as municipal accounting offices or commerce groups. This administrative reinforcement allows the organizations to better serve the broader community of micro-entrepreneurs.

The nature of this work requires volunteers to possess at least a basic understanding of finance or business administration. While previous experience in microfinance or teaching is advantageous, the essential requirement is a commitment to the mission and a professional approach. The schedule is flexible, usually requiring 20 to 30 hours per week, which allows ample time for planning, preparation, and cultural immersion. By applying your financial acumen, you contribute to a structural change that elevates the living conditions and economic resilience of countless families in Costa Rica, making this volunteer opportunity a highly impactful blend of business experience and social justice.
