    Why Volunteer in Internal Medicine in Tanzania?

    Your Role:

    As a volunteer in the Internal Medicine Department, you will be an integral part of the medical team, contributing to various essential tasks. Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

    • Patient Assessments: Assisting with initial evaluations and ongoing assessments of patients’ medical conditions.
    • Treatment Administration: Supporting the administration of treatments and medications under the supervision of licensed medical professionals.

    • Chronic Disease Management: Engaging in discussions about patient care plans for chronic diseases, offering support to patients and their families.

    • Clinical Procedures: Observing and assisting in relevant procedures, such as:

      • Blood draws and lab tests
      • Administration of IV fluids
      • Monitoring vital signs and patient status
    • Record Keeping: Entering and maintaining accurate medical records, following strict confidentiality protocols.

    • Experiential Learning: Actively working while observing and learning from experienced medical professionals about diagnosis and treatment processes.

    • Preparing a Report: Compiling a concise report summarizing your experiences and key observations during your placement.

    You may choose to participate in additional outreach work, including:

    • Volunteering at a community clinic on weekends.

    Your Stay in Arusha:

    You'll stay at one of our 4 Siret Hostels offering comfortable accommodations, excellent meals, and security. The hostel is located in a quiet neighborhood, a short distance from the town center, and provides a supportive environment to connect with other volunteers. Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry services (for a small fee), and dedicated support staff are included.

    Transportation:

    You will experience local transportation, utilizing walking, public minibuses (budget approximately $1 per day, 4-5 days a week), or taxis

    Essential Information:

    • Visa & Permit: A visa and work permit are required. Inquire for details and costs.
    • Hospital Practice Fee: A weekly contribution of up to $50 USD is payable to your host hospital (Ministry of Health, Tanzania).
    • Airport Transfer: Available from Kilimanjaro (KIA) or Arusha (ARK) airports

    Your typical day will usually begin very early, receiving a general and bedside handover of your patients. You will then be given supervised charge of a group of patients/patient list for the day and either observe or assist in managing the care and needs of those patients for the day.  You day can be either very hectic and extremely challenging or slow and very quiet. You will need to be motivated, resilient and work well in a team in order to get the best out of your experience.

    12:00-13:00 Lunch Break
    15:00 Placement ends

    The rest of the day will be yours to relax and enjoy what the town has to offer you!

There is a vibrant night life on most evenings in Arusha, whether you want to enjoy a quiet drink, watch outdoor cinema or go dancing. 

    Siret Trip Adventures provide a unique opportunity for our special volunteers to experience more of Africa's beauty. Take a scenic weekend walking tour of the lush rolling foothills of Mt Meru or a breathtaking day trips to some the world's most admired national reserves. Arusha is packed with opportunity to experience unique and unforgettable outdoor adventures. 

    What else is there to do?

    There are endless possibilities. Most volunteers rave about climbing Kilimanjaro. This usually takes about a week, so ensure you organise this with us before you arrive. Take advantage of this amazing tourist treasure.

    Hot springs

    An oasis in the middle of a barren landscape. The hot springs are truly magnificent. This can be organised as a day trip at any time. 

    The Waterfalls

    Another hot favourite. Hiking across lush vegetation to the spectacular waterfalls.

    Safari

    Ah yes, what Tanzania is world famous for. Safari is once in a lifetime adventure that is unique to the Africa experience. Unforgettable and jaw dropping landscapes is what is promised. This will need you to sacrifice some days, so please ensure you organise this long in advance. 

    Tour packages, Safari's and cultural experiences are all available.

    During orientation you will be shown tasty and affordable places to get lunch during your work day. You will have a good variety of local and western food places. There are amazing cafe's, bistro's and affordable western restaurants to enjoy a burger, salad, seafood etc!
