    Education Program

This program gives volunteers the opportunity to work in local schools and assist teachers in educating children ages 3 and older.

In Uganda, Baby Class includes daycare and kindergarten. Primary School runs from P1 through P7, followed by Secondary School, which runs from Senior 1 through Senior 6.

Our education program focuses on supporting teachers and schools through educational activities, new initiatives, and additional classroom assistance. Many schools are overcrowded and under-resourced, making volunteers an invaluable addition to the classroom.

    Volunteers may assist teachers with:

    • Helping manage and support classroom activities

    • Developing and preparing worksheets and educational materials

    • Marking assignments and student work

    • Reading with children and encouraging literacy

    • Organizing physical education and sports activities

    • Introducing creative and interactive learning activities

    • Showing educational movies and leading group activities

    • Providing individual attention and encouragement to students

    • Assisting with general classroom and school duties

Volunteers are encouraged to share their own ideas, skills, and creativity while working alongside local teachers and respecting the school’s existing curriculum and teaching methods.

By volunteering in our education program, you will help provide children with additional attention, encouragement, and opportunities to learn and succeed. At the same time, you will gain a deeper understanding of Ugandan culture and education—and create an experience that can be life-changing for both you and the students you serve.

    Free Time & Excursions

During your free time, there are many exciting activities and experiences to enjoy! Many of our volunteers take advantage of extended weekends to explore more of Uganda, including:

    • Go on safari and experience Uganda’s incredible wildlife.

    • Go gorilla trekking and see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

    • Enjoy adventure water sports and other outdoor activities.

All excursions and activities are at the volunteer’s own expense. However, they are arranged through our trusted local partners to help ensure competitive pricing, safety, and a memorable experience.

Because of our close proximity to Kampala, volunteers also have plenty of opportunities to explore the city, visit local craft markets, sample authentic Ugandan cuisine, and attend local events, including soccer games.

We encourage volunteers to take advantage of their weekends to explore Uganda and experience its incredible culture, people, food, wildlife, and natural beauty. Our team is happy to help volunteers arrange trips, transportation, and activities.

Children in Uganda typically begin school at ages 3 - 4, but many families struggle to afford education. Volunteers help support schools and make education more accessible. We believe education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a brighter future for Uganda.

    Program Schedule & Orientation

Our education program is available throughout the year. Although schools have scheduled holiday breaks, many students remain at boarding schools during these periods and continue to participate in organized activities. Teachers also benefit from ongoing volunteer support with lesson planning, educational materials, and classroom preparation.

Upon arrival, volunteers participate in a full-day orientation, usually held on Monday. This orientation provides an introduction to MDU, the local community, program expectations, and important information to help volunteers feel prepared and comfortable before beginning their school placement.
