    Sul programma

Make a meaningful contribution to children’s lives while experiencing everyday life in Guatemala by volunteering with grassroots organisations in and around Quetzaltenango (Xela). This four-week volunteer programme places participants in community-based after-school programmes that support children from underprivileged backgrounds, offering a balance of cultural exchange, practical contribution, and personal growth. 🇬🇹

The organisations we work with support children who may be affected by economic hardship, limited educational opportunities, and unstable home environments. Volunteers play an important role in complementing the work of local Spanish-speaking staff by providing additional attention, encouragement, and support. By simply showing up consistently and engaging with the children, volunteers help create a safe, positive, and motivating environment.

Volunteer involvement focuses on educational and recreational activities such as helping with homework, organising games, and supporting learning through play. Volunteers can also design and facilitate workshops based on their own interests and skills - for example arts and crafts, music, sports, storytelling, life skills, or creative projects; subject to approval by the organisation. In addition to working directly with children, volunteers may contribute to institutional strengthening, assisting with areas such as communications, social media, donor outreach, or basic administrative support, helping organisations build their long-term capacity.

The organisations we partner with are small, grassroots initiatives that are deeply connected to the communities they serve. This close community connection is one of the greatest strengths of the programme, allowing volunteers to experience authentic local projects and build meaningful relationships. At the same time, these organisations can be underfunded and understaffed, and volunteers should be prepared for a degree of informality and occasional disorganisation. While this can feel overwhelming at first, it is also where volunteers are most needed, and where their contribution is often most appreciated.

Volunteers are supported by a programme coordinator based in Quetzaltenango, who provides orientation, induction, and ongoing guidance throughout the placement. However, the coordinator is not present at the organisation on a day-to-day basis. Each organisation has its own local coordinator or staff members who manage daily activities and provide direction at the project level.

All volunteer placements accept participants with any level of Spanish, including complete beginners. To support cultural integration and communication, the programme includes 20 hours of one-to-one Spanish lessons with experienced local teachers. While Spanish is not a requirement, volunteers generally find that the more Spanish they speak, the easier daily life becomes and the more rewarding their interactions with children, staff, and community members are.

Projects are located in and around Quetzaltenango (Xela). Volunteers typically travel to their placements by local bus or taxi. Local buses take approximately 20 minutes each way and cost around Q3 per trip (less than USD $0.50). Taxis cost approximately Q25 each way (around USD $4). Transportation is affordable and easy to navigate with guidance provided during orientation.

This programme is well suited to volunteers who are flexible, proactive, and open to working in dynamic community environments, and who are motivated by meaningful engagement rather than perfectly structured settings.

    Giornata tipica

The volunteer programme is designed to help participants settle in gradually, build confidence, and understand the local context before fully engaging in their placement.

Week One: Orientation, Spanish & Induction

During the first week, volunteers focus on language learning, orientation, and getting to know both the city and the organisations they will be working with.

Volunteers spend their mornings in one-to-one Spanish lessons, totalling 4 hours per day. Lessons are tailored to each volunteer’s level and learning pace, with the aim of helping participants progress at least one level during the week. These lessons are extremely valuable for daily life in Quetzaltenango and for building stronger connections within the organisations and communities.

In the afternoons, volunteers take part in an induction programme. This includes an introduction to Quetzaltenango, guidance on navigating the city, and visits to the partner organisations. Volunteers begin spending time with the children through informal activities, allowing them to build rapport and become familiar with the environment. This week is also an opportunity to observe how each organisation operates, understand their needs, and get a feel for the rhythm of the programme.

Volunteers meet with organisation coordinators, who outline their plans, priorities, and expectations. At the same time, volunteers are encouraged to share their own skills and interests and discuss which areas they would like to focus on during their placement.

Weeks Two to Four: Active Volunteering

From week two onwards, volunteers begin working more independently with their assigned organisations. Working hours are flexible and arranged in coordination with the organisation, but volunteers typically contribute around 20 - 30 hours per week.

    A typical day may include:

Morning - Organisational & Administrative Support
Volunteers assist with behind-the-scenes tasks that help strengthen the organisation, such as social media support, donor or sponsor communication, content creation (photos, videos, reports), and general administrative assistance.

    Afternoon - Feeding Programme
Volunteers support the daily feeding programme, an important component of the children’s wellbeing and routine.

Later Afternoon - Activities with Children
After the feeding programme, volunteers work directly with the children through educational activities, homework support, games, and creative workshops. Volunteers can take initiative and develop activities that align with both the organisation’s goals and the children’s needs.

    Flexibility & Local Context

The children involved in the programme come from underprivileged communities where access to consistent schooling can be limited. As a result, schedules may occasionally change due to local circumstances or broader situations affecting Guatemala. Volunteers should be prepared for some flexibility and understand that adaptability is an essential part of working in a grassroots community setting.

While plans may shift, volunteers are always supported and guided, and flexibility is often rewarded with deeper understanding, stronger relationships, and a more authentic volunteer experience.

    Attività del tempo libero

Quetzaltenango (Xela) is a vibrant cultural hub, offering plenty to do outside of volunteering and making it easy to build a fulfilling day-to-day life during your stay.

Volunteers can take advantage of a wide range of classes and workshops, including salsa dancing, cooking, and traditional Guatemalan weaving using time-honoured techniques. These activities are a great way to learn new skills while connecting with local people and culture.

For those who enjoy staying active, Quetzaltenango has numerous gyms, yoga studios, CrossFit classes, and other sports activities. Football is especially popular, and it’s common to find mixed-gender teams where locals and volunteers play together in a relaxed, social atmosphere.

The city also has a lively nightlife scene, with live music, karaoke nights, and a great selection of local restaurants and cafés. Whether you’re looking for a low-key evening or something more social, there’s always something happening.

Nature lovers will find some truly impressive hiking opportunities in the surrounding area, particularly around volcanoes with varying levels of difficulty. Many of these routes are less travelled than those near Guatemala’s main tourist centres, offering a more peaceful and authentic experience. Popular climbs from Xela include Volcán Santa María, Laguna Chicabal, and Tajumulco, the highest peak in Central America. Local tour operators can arrange guided hikes and provide the necessary equipment.

There are also several coffee farms located nearby, offering rustic and authentic tours that provide insight into Guatemala’s rich coffee-growing tradition.

Daily life in Quetzaltenango is very affordable, making it easier to enjoy classes, activities, meals out, and weekend trips on a volunteer budget.

Antigua and Lake Atitlán are both easily accessible for a weekend trip.

Prelievo dall'aeroporto a La Aurora International Airport

A private taxi is included to bring volunteers directly to their homestay in Quetzaltenango. The taxi can collect you from La Aurora Airport (Guatemala City) or from select locations in Guatemala City, Antigua, or Lake Atitlán (San Pedro or Panajachel).

Please note that the journey from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango typically takes around 4 hours, traffic permitting.

The included pickup service is only available from the locations mentioned above and will take you directly to Quetzaltenango. If volunteers wish to travel elsewhere first - for example, spending a night in Antigua before continuing to Quetzaltenango - this can be arranged, but it will incur an additional cost to cover the extra travel and accommodation. In such cases, the included taxi service will cover the leg from the chosen location (e.g., Antigua) to Quetzaltenango.

    Alloggio

During the four-week programme, volunteers stay with a local homestay family, providing an excellent opportunity to immerse themselves in Guatemalan culture and practise Spanish daily.

All homestay families are located in Zone 1 of Quetzaltenango, the recommended area for volunteers. This central location is close to many restaurants, cafés, bars, and other activities, while the organisations are generally around a 30-minute bus ride from the homestay.

Volunteers have their own private room and all homestays have Wi-Fi. Each volunteer is provided with their own key, allowing freedom to come and go as they wish. Bathrooms are usually shared with other family members.

Some homestay families have larger homes with multiple rooms, meaning volunteers may share the homestay with other participants. Each volunteer still has their own private room. Volunteers can indicate in advance whether they prefer to stay only with the family or in a larger home with other volunteers. Please note that availability depends on timing and whether other volunteers are scheduled to be there at the same time.

All meals are included, providing a taste of traditional Guatemalan home cooking and an opportunity to share mealtimes with the family.

    Cibo e Bevande

Volunteers staying with a homestay family will receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. Homestay families are able to cater to specific dietary requirements if informed in advance.

On days when volunteers are working throughout the day at their placement, they may have the option to eat at the organisation’s feeding programme rather than returning home for lunch. Please note, however, that the organisations cannot accommodate specific dietary requirements. In these cases, the homestay family can provide a packed lunch to take with you.

Homestays provide eco-filtered water, which is available for volunteers to drink. If volunteers prefer bottled water, this must be purchased themselves.

Any meals or drinks outside of what is provided by the homestay are the responsibility of the volunteer, including when eating out at restaurants, cafés, or bars.

    Dettagli all'arrivo

Volunteers are encouraged to start their programme on a Monday and to arrive in Quetzaltenango on the Saturday or Sunday beforehand. This helps ensure a relaxed and well-paced start. If this is not possible, we are happy to be flexible and alternative arrival dates can be arranged.

Volunteer placements are available for most of the year except for the month of December. However, there are a few periods when placements are not available or when normal schedules may be affected due to national holidays and celebrations.

Placements are not available during Semana Santa (Easter week), when many organisations and businesses close.

During Guatemala’s Independence celebrations on 14 and 15 September, volunteers should expect some disruption to usual schedules during that week, as schools and community programmes may operate on reduced hours.

Volunteering placements are also not offered from shortly before Christmas until the first week of January, when many organisations take a seasonal break.
