    Sul programma

As a medical volunteer in Vietnam, you’ll have the chance to experience the country’s healthcare system first-hand. Working alongside local professionals at one of Vietnam’s leading university hospitals, you’ll observe and learn from experienced staff in a fast-paced clinical environment. This opportunity is ideal for students in health-related fields, offering practical exposure that deepens understanding and supports future career goals.

    BACKGROUND TO THE MEDICAL PROGRAM

Over the past three decades, Vietnam’s health standards have improved significantly, reflecting the country’s rapid economic growth since the 1986 reforms. These developments have contributed to higher life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates, though some challenges remain.

Despite this progress, Vietnam’s healthcare workforce still faces pressure to meet the needs of its population. In 2015, the country had only about 8 physicians per 10,000 people, compared with 28 in the UK and 26 in the US. Even among neighbouring Southeast Asian nations, Vietnam’s ratio remains low, creating strain across hospitals and clinics.

Medical volunteers in Vietnam have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while contributing to a system that benefits from additional support. Working within local hospitals offers exposure to a wide range of cases and valuable learning experiences that help build both skills and confidence. Alongside the professional insight, volunteers can immerse themselves in Vietnam’s rich culture and dynamic way of life, making this experience both meaningful and rewarding.

    MEDICAL VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT EXAMPLES

Viet Duc University Hospital (VDUH) - Viet Duc University Hospital is one of Vietnam’s oldest and most respected medical institutions. Founded in 1906 and renamed Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in 1973, it maintains strong historical ties with the former Democratic Republic of Germany, reflected in its name and ongoing international collaboration.

Recognised as the country’s leading surgical centre, the hospital focuses on four main areas: patient care, medical research, education, and international partnerships. Originally built to accommodate 430 beds, it has since expanded to over 1,500 beds across 26 departments and houses 52 operating theatres equipped with modern surgical technology for both standard and advanced procedures.

Medical volunteers placed at VDUH have the chance to observe a wide range of surgical specialities, including neurosurgery, orthopaedics, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, abdominal emergencies, gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, paediatrics, and urology. Exposure to high-level operations such as robotic surgery, cardiac valve replacements, laparoscopic procedures, and organ transplants is also possible.

The hospital offers an outstanding learning environment for medical students. By shadowing local doctors, attending ward rounds, and joining clinical discussions, participants gain valuable insight into Vietnam’s healthcare system and the realities of surgical care in a busy hospital setting. The placement is primarily observational, with opportunities to rotate through departments to develop a broader understanding of clinical practice.

    STUDENT ELECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES

Specialist elective placements in Vietnam provide students with a valuable chance to gain international experience within a professional healthcare environment. Whether you are studying medicine or nursing, these placements allow you to learn directly from skilled health professionals across a range of clinical settings. During the application process, you can indicate your preferred area of focus in the ‘Special Requirements’ section, and the local team will arrange a placement that aligns with your interests.

Medical - A medical elective in Vietnam offers an excellent opportunity to observe the country’s healthcare system firsthand. You’ll accompany doctors on their daily rounds through various hospital departments, shadowing their work and learning from experienced medical practitioners. This experience will deepen your understanding of local medical practices and give you valuable insight into the challenges and approaches within Vietnam’s healthcare system.

Nursing - A nursing elective in Vietnam allows you to engage with nursing teams in one of Hanoi’s major hospitals. You’ll observe surgeries, assist with pre- and post-operative preparations, and shadow nurses during their ward rounds. There are also opportunities to interact with patients, offering support and helping with their movement around the hospital. This placement provides practical learning and exposure to a diverse range of clinical situations, helping you develop both confidence and understanding in an international medical context.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER AS A MEDICAL VOLUNTEER IN VIETNAM

Return Airport Transfer - The return airport transfer is not included in the program fee. However, the local team can assist with arranging your transfer to the airport or another destination at the end of your stay. Organising this once in-country provides flexibility, as travel plans often change and participants sometimes share transport if they have similar flight times. Ridesharing apps are also widely used and affordable. Many volunteers choose to travel during their final days rather than go straight to the airport, so costs will vary depending on your chosen destination and mode of transport.

Project Duration - A stay of 3–4 weeks is recommended to make the most of your medical placement. A 2-week stay is still meaningful, though some of your first days will include orientation and city tours. Those who stay longer typically develop a stronger connection to the project, gain deeper insight, and leave with a greater sense of fulfilment.

Project Structure - Volunteers have the opportunity to observe doctors and learn about clinical procedures, though schedules in a busy hospital can change at short notice. Working hours may vary depending on doctors’ availability, and afternoons are usually less structured than mornings. Being flexible, proactive, and open-minded will help you make the most of your experience.

Medical Donation - This program includes a small additional fee that covers a weekly donation to the hospital. It also supports the presence of a local coordinator who assigns you to a doctor and helps you understand the work taking place around you.

Eligibility - This placement is open only to university students studying medicine, nursing, or healthcare sciences. It is not suitable for applicants outside these fields.

Internship-Style Experience - The placement focuses on observation and learning rather than hands-on practice. Regardless of your level of medical training, clinical involvement is not permitted. The aim is to give you an educational experience, allowing you to observe local healthcare systems and learn from medical professionals.

Trained Professionals - This program is not designed for qualified or practising professionals. It is specifically intended for medical students seeking an educational experience abroad and an opportunity to observe healthcare in an international setting.

YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE & TYPICAL WORK DAY

As a medical volunteer in Vietnam, you will be based at Viet Duc University Hospital, working alongside experienced doctors and medical staff. Your placement is primarily observational, designed to provide an internship-style learning experience that offers insight into Vietnam’s healthcare system and hospital practices. This opportunity allows you to witness a wide variety of surgical and medical cases in a professional clinical environment.

Throughout your placement, you’ll have the chance to shadow doctors, join bedside teaching sessions, attend ward rounds, and participate in small group discussions. Volunteers may also explore a range of medical specialities, including neurosurgery, neurology, cardiovascular and paediatric surgery, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, urology, spinal and maxillofacial surgery, intensive care, anaesthesiology, oncology, and organ transplantation.

You can request to rotate through up to two departments during your stay, though final placements depend on hospital availability and your level of experience. To get the most from the experience, it’s important to be proactive, curious, and engaged — those who show genuine interest tend to gain the most from their time at the hospital.

Volunteers typically attend the hospital from Monday to Thursday for around four hours per day. Fridays are optional and can either be used for additional learning at the hospital or to begin your weekend early and explore Vietnam.

Daily travel to and from the hospital is by public bus, which takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes each way. The bus stop is a 10-minute walk from the accommodation, and transport costs are covered — you’ll either receive a bus pass on arrival or weekly reimbursement. On your first day, a member of the local team will accompany you to the hospital to introduce you to your placement, and a coordinator will usually meet you each morning to ensure everything runs smoothly.

High-octane Hanoi is a feast for the senses. The first thing that hits you is the sound of swarms of buzzing motorbikes followed swiftly by the amazing wafts and tastes of incredible street food found throughout the city. Full of distinctive character as well as a confident buzz, Hanoi is now considered a pretty cool city.

For many, simply being in Hanoi and soaking up the atmosphere is entertainment in itself but there are many fascinating places for you to visit whilst you’re not volunteering both in the city and further afield.

Prelievo dall'aeroporto a Noi Bai International Airport

You should arrive into Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi (airport code HAN) on the Wednesday. The airport pickup is available 24 hours. On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you straight to the Volunteer House in Hanoi where you can relax and settle in. This journey takes around 45 minutes depending on traffic.

    Alloggio

On the Vietnam volunteer program, you will live in our Volunteer House. Our accommodation is based within a quiet and friendly neighbourhood of Hanoi, approximately a 45 minute bus journey from the Old Quarter of Hanoi (the main tourist area). There are a number of restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs only a walk from the Volunteer House. Our Vietnam volunteer programs are also located in various locations around the city.

As a volunteer in Vietnam, you will be living with other international volunteers. The Volunteer House is large, basic but comfortable. Bedrooms conform to a single-sex dorm-style setup, with up to 8 people per room. Air-conditioning is available in each room and individuals will be provided with the bed linen. During the winter months, participants are recommended to bring additional bedding, such as a sleeping bag. Each bedroom in the Volunteer House has its own shared bathroom, with a western-style toilet and shower. Hot water at the accommodation is provided in the winter months only. There is some, but limited hanging space in each room.

There is free Wi-Fi within certain areas of the house, including the main communal area. This can be intermittent, therefore volunteers in Vietnam are also recommended to purchase a local SIM card in-country to use with an unlocked mobile phone. There is a large designated communal area within the Volunteer House where volunteers can relax and socialise. Within the accommodation, there are two washing machines that can be used free of charge, and participants can purchase detergent cheaply from shops nearby. Alternatively, there are laundry services around the neighbourhood, available for a reasonable price.

Each volunteer will be provided with a locker to keep valuable items. Volunteers are asked to pay a deposit of 50,000 VND or 5 USD for the locker key which can be reclaimed at the end of your program. However, volunteers are encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Vietnam. There is fridge space within the accommodation for volunteers to cool items they need to keep chilled. Please note that power cuts are fairly commonplace in Vietnam although they tend not to last more than a couple of hours.

Each volunteer is provided with a house key (subject to a deposit of 5 USD) so the house is accessible at all time and to ensure general volunteer safety. We also have a member of staff (usually a nanny or an intern from the local team) present in the house overnight. Please note if you arrive late in the evening on the arrival day at our Volunteer House, it is likely our local team will not be present and you will meet them the following day.

Most of our volunteer projects in Vietnam are not within walking distance of the Volunteer House. In these cases, you will need to travel to and from the volunteer placement each day. The local team will introduce you to different options during your orientation. Most participants will reach their project via public bus.

    Cibo e Bevande

During your volunteer trip to Vietnam, you’ll be provided with three meals a day, except on Saturdays when meals are not served. Meals will be traditional Vietnamese dishes – this means a lot of rice! All food will be nutritious and freshly cooked. Free drinking water is available 24/7.
For breakfast, you can expect fruit, toast and tea/coffee. Some of the volunteer opportunities will provide you with lunch. This is usually the case for volunteers that have longer travel times to and from the project and it is not possible for them to return to the Volunteer House. In these cases, lunch is either provided at the project or you can take lunch at a nearby cafe. In the latter circumstance, the local team will reimburse you up to 40,000 VND. When lunch is taken at the Volunteer House, the dish is usually always a Vietnamese dish, which will include soup, rice, vegetables and sometimes meat or fish.

Dinner is served at the Volunteer House. Generally speaking, meals are served in the early evenings and usually divided into equal portions by the nannies to ensure everyone gets an equal amount. You can expect a variety of dishes, so there will be always something to suit even the fussiest eaters! A typical meal will have pork, fish, beef or chicken and tofu or egg and at least two different kinds of vegetable dishes, along with rice and soup. On an ad-hoc basis, our team also serve a western meal – our volunteers always appreciate this. Meals at the Volunteer House are usually served in buffet format so participants are recommended to eat as soon as the food is ready to avoid food going cold quickly.
If you fancy eating out there are plenty of cafes and local amenities in the surrounding area or you can take a bus or taxi into the main tourist area, the Old Quarter, in the city of Hanoi.
