Samburu Village, located in northern Kenya, is home to a semi-nomadic community that is a sub-tribe of the Maasai. This community coexists harmoniously with nature while preserving its cultural traditions. They wear traditional attire and reside in small huts constructed by women using cow dung and mud. Members of the Samburu community practice collective sharing of resources, including income and food, fostering a strong sense of fraternity and loyalty among them. This indigenous group offers a distinctive safari experience, and the Samburu village is particularly friendly, with the locals loving our volunteers immensely.

Volunteer to Share Love and Hope 🌟

Every child deserves love, care, and a safe environment to grow. Yet, in the heart of Samburu, Kenya, many children face challenges that can limit their potential. UCESCO Africa invites compassionate volunteers to join our Samburu StarChild Care Companion program and make a lasting difference in the lives of these children.

As a Care Companion, you will provide love, mentorship, and emotional support to children in informal settlements and rural communities, helping them feel valued, safe, and empowered. Your presence will create a nurturing environment where children can learn, play, and thrive, while you gain a unique, life-changing experience in volunteering in Africa.

💖 Why Join the Samburu StarChild Care Program?

    1. Transform lives: Your guidance and attention can instill confidence, joy, and hope in every child.

    2. Empower communities: Support local caregivers and contribute to sustainable child development in Samburu.

    3. Cultural exchange: Experience the vibrant Samburu community, their traditions, and resilience.

    4. Professional growth: Gain hands-on experience in childcare, early childhood development, and volunteer programs in Africa.

    🌍 Volunteer Roles:

    1. Provide loving companionship and mentorship to children.

    2. Assist with daily routines, education, and recreational activities.

    3. Facilitate creativity, arts, games, and storytelling to inspire young minds.

    4. Support women, caregivers, and community leaders in nurturing a safe and positive environment.

We currently have 250 children enrolled, with some attending classes under a tree and in temporary facilities. There are approximately two completed blocks with a nice modern volunteer house for our volunteers. The school fulfills a dual role by offering education and serving as a haven for children facing challenging home circumstances or those who have lost their parents. Without the dedicated support of the school staff, many of these children would be at risk of homelessness and may turn to theft to survive.

The school's teachers are passionate about their work and have ambitious goals for the future. They aim to motivate children who have faced hardships to improve their circumstances and escape the cycle of poverty. Additionally, they are dedicated to ensuring that girls are not disadvantaged due to their gender. Each day at the only school in Samburu Village is filled with laughter and happiness. Most students regard education as a precious opportunity. They understand that diligent study is essential for realizing their dreams and supporting their families.

As you get ready to embark on your volunteer journey in Kenya, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the following essential guidelines.

    1. Kenyan Currency, Mobile Phones, and Internet Access

    • Having a mobile phone will enable you to stay in touch with your family and friends. Local SIM cards are available, with Safaricom being the predominant provider. A SIM card can be purchased for approximately 1 US Dollar, offering competitive rates. The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling, and you can exchange money at malls or withdraw cash from ATMs. U.S. dollars are accepted for entrance fees at National Parks.
    • Acquiring a local SIM card enables you to access M-Pesa, a popular and user-friendly mobile payment platform in Kenya. This facilitates seamless transactions, whether in markets, for transport fares, or even in remote villages across Kenya, eliminating the need to carry cash. This is particularly beneficial as taxi drivers often claim they lack change and may retain excess amounts. With M-Pesa, you can pay the exact fare required, unless you choose to provide a tip. Additionally, you can top up your M-Pesa account using services such as Wise.
    • Internet access is available via Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, and public areas such as cafes and shopping centers. Alternatively, modem sticks for laptops can be purchased for additional connectivity options.
    2. Packing Essentials (Required items):
    • eTA-Visa, which can be obtained via this link (https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de/evisa)
    • Passport (ensure it is valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry),
    • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate,
    • credit card and/or cash,
    • power adapter for local outlets.
    • Recommended items: personal toiletries, travel pillow, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, durable footwear or shoes suitable for outdoor use, fanny pack, compact power bank, hairdryer, and clothing suitable for the weather (check the forecast before your arrival, as conditions may vary from your departure location). Laundry services are available for an additional fee.
    3. What can you expect on your first day with UCESCO
    • Upon your arrival, a member of the UCESCO team, either Kingsley or another representative, will meet you at the airport, and communication will be facilitated via WhatsApp. Your orientation is scheduled for the first weekday at the UCESCO office located in Kibera before you proceed to Samuru Village, Maralal. If you arrive during the weekend, we can arrange a brief city tour or a one- to two-day safari; however, your first visit to the project will occur on Monday. Edna, the volunteer coordinator, will introduce you to the organization and its various initiatives, so feel free to ask her any questions you may have. Following this, you may choose to visit the mall to acquire a SIM card (a passport is required) and set up an M-Pesa account.

    4. While in Samburu, you can take part in various leisure activities, such as:
    1. Visiting local homes to immerse yourself in the culture and connect with families
    2. Bird-watching for nature enthusiasts
    3. - Playing football with local children, a fun way to engage with the community
    4. Collecting water from the river, offering insight into the daily lives of Samburu women
    5. Men can go with the locals to take care of the animals

    5. Exploration Opportunities (Tours and Safaris)
    • UCESCO-AFRICA invites you to delve into the vibrant lifestyle and culture of Kenya. If you are interested in safaris or travel experiences, our affiliated company, Meaningful Travel Services (Tours and Travel company), provides budget-friendly safari options, hotel bookings, flight arrangements, and travel insurance.
    • Weekends are an ideal time for our volunteers to uncover the marvels of our nation through safaris. For trips outside Samburu, such as to the Masai Mara or Mombasa, we recommend a minimum stay of two nights and three days (Friday to Sunday) to fully enjoy the experience. In contrast, safaris within or close to  Samburu can be completed in one or two days, typically over the weekend. Our organization is dedicated to ensuring you have sufficient time to explore Kenya, as we believe experiencing the rich lifestyle and culture of Africa is vital during your visit.
    • Meaningful Travel Services, a premier travel agency, offers an exciting selection of upcoming tours and extraordinary destinations within this beautiful East African gem. From the famous savannahs of the Maasai Mara to the pristine beaches along the Kenyan coast, their thoughtfully crafted tours will immerse you in Kenya's diverse landscapes, wildlife, and cultures. Kenya Safari Animals & Wildlife

    • The wildlife of Kenya serves as the primary draw for tourists exploring Africa, largely due to the remarkable variety of animals and birds that can be observed during a safari, a diversity that is unparalleled in many other countries. With its rich ecosystem, Kenya is home to around 400 species of mammals and an even greater number of bird species, providing an exceptional experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can expect to encounter some of the most iconic safari animals, including the Big Cats, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and many others.
    • Animals are categorized into mammals, featuring the renowned Big Five—lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo—as well as the Big Nine, which includes additional animals that are also highly sought after during safari excursions in Kenya. These include the cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus, and the commonly seen zebra. Many of our volunteers inquire about the best locations in Kenya to view all of the Big Nine. The ideal approach is to explore at least 2 to 3 different parks during your safari, with the Masai Mara National Reserve being one of the few locations where all of the Big Nine can potentially be spotted.

Attractive Destinations to Explore in Kenya

    1. Samburu Village - A visit to this village immerses you in the authentic African way of life. It is a rural community where one of our educational initiatives is located, providing a unique experience. 2. Nairobi National Park (ideal for wildlife observation close to the city)
    3. Lake Nakuru National Park (renowned for its flamingo populations)
    4. Amboseli National Park (offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro)

    😊 Warm Welcome
From the moment you land, our goal is to make you feel safe, welcomed, and part of the UCESCO Africa family. We look forward to hosting you and making your volunteer experience unforgettable!

N/B Just to remind you, sometimes luggage delays and we have seen our volunteer having a hard time as they are waiting for their luggage for three days, make sure at least the back bag/ the small bag you will be walking with, have all the basic items, and at least few clothes to change in case you luggage delays, At least make sure you can survive for two to three days but not always luggage delays but it happens. it's just a caution because we have seen volunteer forced to go the the mall to buy a few clothes to survive as they are waiting for their luggage to arrive, which is an unnecessary expense.

    Boende

At UCESCO Africa, we believe that where you stay is an important part of your volunteer experience. Our volunteer accommodation is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment where you can relax, connect, and feel at home.

Volunteers stay in a cozy, shared volunteer house located within a friendly and secure community. The house offers a warm, family-like atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow volunteers from around the world.

Rooms are shared (typically 2–4 people per room with your own bed) and are furnished with comfortable beds, clean bedding, and secure storage for your belongings. Separate arrangements can be made for couples, families, or those requesting additional privacy.

You will enjoy freshly prepared, home-cooked meals, offering a mix of local Kenyan cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice.

    The house includes:

    1. Clean shared bathrooms with running water
    2. A comfortable common lounge area for relaxing and socializing
    3. Access to Wi-Fi
    4. Laundry services or facilities
    5. 24/7 support from our local team
Located within accessible distance to project sites, the accommodation allows for easy daily commutes while also giving you a chance to experience authentic local life and culture.

Above all, our accommodation is more than just a place to stay — it’s a space where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and your volunteer journey truly comes to life.

In addition to our accommodation, volunteers may also consider staying at Maralal Safari Lodge. Nestled within the Maralal Game Sanctuary, this lodge offers a peaceful and picturesque setting ideal for relaxation. Volunteers can enjoy stunning views of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, giraffes, and buffalo, as they roam freely nearby, accompanied by the soothing sounds of nature at night. The bed and breakfast rate is approximately 90 USD per person per day, in addition to the project fee. You have the option to stay at our accommodations or choose Maralal Safari Lodge. While our facilities are of high quality, you may miss out on the wildlife experience, though you will have ample opportunities to engage with village life, including home visits, and we can arrange bonfires until around 9 PM  as you watch beautiful stars and moon at night with beautiful story teeling from clan Elders about our cultures until it’s time to rest. If you wish to explore the city, you are free to leave the project site earlier. Official volunteer hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the remainder of your time at your discretion.

    Preparation for Arrival

Engaging in volunteer work in Kenya through our organization promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to make new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

    Transportation
Probox vehicles and bodaboda (motorcycles) are frequently utilized for transportation in Samburu village. After a few days of acclimatization, you may want to explore the local area, visit supermarkets, or access ATMs. However, we have a designated private bodaboda and comfortable cars that transport our volunteers to the project site each morning and return them in the afternoon. During your first few days, a member of the Kenyan team will accompany you until you feel confident navigating the routes on your own. It is important to learn how to negotiate fares with locals when using public transportation services, as relying on local taxis without bargaining knowledge can lead to higher costs. When using public transport, whether as a volunteer or a local resident, be cautious of pickpockets, especially in crowded situations. It is advisable to avoid carrying valuables or large sums of cash. For longer trips, we recommend coordinating travel plans with the Kenyan team, who can arrange transportation in a private vehicle or van. Please remember that commuting to the project site is crucial.
