    About the program

Whether it’s walking the animals, cleaning the sanctuary or planting trees, for a minimum duration of two weeks, your efforts will make a huge difference to the animals. Some of the animals at the sanctuary include dogs, chickens, cats, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits among others. The project depends on the help of volunteers to assist in having the animals live free from exploitation. Additionally, the project’s goal is to restore the ecosystem with species of native trees and shrubs to promote biodiversity. Keep in mind that this project is not an easy holiday option and the work can get hard and messy at times. Any exploration can be done after you complete your volunteer duration.

The area around the project is quiet and rural, shaped by open fields, olive groves, and small streams that follow the land toward the Tagus River. Life here moves slowly, with wide skies, birdsong, and a strong sense of connection to nature. It’s a peaceful landscape that invites reflection and simple outdoor living.

Set within this countryside is Rescue Centre, a sanctuary dedicated to giving rescued and vulnerable animals a safe place to recover or live out their lives. Spread across the land, the center blends naturally into its surroundings, where care for animals goes hand in hand with habitat restoration and daily work in nature. Together, the area and the sanctuary offer a calm, meaningful environment focused on healing, responsibility, and coexistence with the natural world.

Even though at times it may be challenging, helping to give the animals a safe and comfortable place to live can be extremely rewarding. Note that rescued horses and cows are not allowed to be ridden.

Some of your responsibilities will include:
    •    Feeding, cleaning and enrichment
    •    Dog-walking and behavioral support
    •    Cat house care and enrichment
    •    Poultry, turkeys, pigeons/doves and turtle care
    •    Support with horses and small ruminants
    •    General maintenance
    •    Gardening, forest restoration and land care
    •    Optional support with medical routines under supervision

You will be volunteering alongside other international volunteers and local staff being part of a great team of individuals. We expect volunteers to try to fit in while keeping a flexible and openminded attitude. Most of all we expect you to learn and have a great time while assisting with this great cause.

    Benefits:

    • Get the opportunity to work with plants and animals.
    • Learn new culture and language.
    • Gain knowledge and experience in the native flora and fauna of Portugal.

    Free-time activities

Life around Perofilho moves at a gentle pace. The landscape is mostly open countryside, with fields, small streams, and dirt roads that invite slow walks or bike rides. Mornings are quiet, often filled with birdsong, and it’s easy to feel connected to nature and the rhythms of rural life. It’s the kind of place where time stretches out and days feel grounded and simple.

A short drive away, Santarém rises above the Tagus River, offering a contrast to the calm of the countryside. The old town is full of history, with narrow streets, churches, and viewpoints that look out across the vast river plain. One of the most loved spots is the Portas do Sol garden, where you can sit under the trees and watch the light change over the valley. Cafés and small restaurants give the city a welcoming feel, and there’s always something to discover, whether it’s a hidden square, a local market, or a quiet museum.

Beyond the city, the region opens up even more. The Tagus River shapes much of the landscape, and nearby you’ll find places like the Castle of Almourol, standing alone on a small island, or the salt pans of Rio Maior, where traditional methods are still used today. Food and wine are an important part of life here, with hearty Ribatejo dishes and local produce reflecting the agricultural character of the land.

Altogether, the area around Perofilho offers a balance of stillness and discovery — a place where you can slow down, connect with nature, and still have history, culture, and small adventures close at hand.
