    About the program

Experience a Unique Animal Welfare Adventure

Guayabo Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is nestled within 300 acres of untouched wilderness in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. More than just a sanctuary, we are a community committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of animals and the people who care for them. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals, offering them a second chance at life in a loving home in an area up until now had no resources of this kind.

We provide a safe haven and crucial medical services to rescued horses, dogs, goats, and more. Our volunteer work extends beyond the sanctuary, reaching the broader community through our pet food bank, spay and neuter programs, and free or reduced-cost medical services.

Guayabo Animal Rescue was established to better serve people and pets in a remote part of Costa Rica. What began as a sanctuary has since evolved into a comprehensive animal rescue and veterinary treatment center—one of the few in the region providing essential medical care to animals in need. Volunteers will work along side our team caring for animals, providing food to street dogs, providing spay and neuter campaigns to the people and their pets, basically helping us run a large scale sanctuary and rescue - diving in and doing the work that it takes to save lives.

Volunteers just need to bring a good attitude, love of animals, muck boots, good hiking boots, sun protective clothing (thin long sleeve shirts, long pants, sun hat, sunscreen, and a desire to help people and pets.

    Volunteer Project Aims:

    – Care and Protection: you will provide essential care, support, and socialization for our many animals, working along side our team.
    – Community Education: help us educate the community and school children on the importance of humane treatment.
    – Stray Population Control: address the stray animal population by helping us with our monthly sterilization programs.
    – Empowerment through Education: you will help learn animal husbandry skills and encourage active community participation in animal care.

     Your work will include:

    – Animal husbandry work and socialization
    – Veterinary work, which can include spay/neuter assistance, wound care, and even major medical care as needed

Volunteers programs are offered year round and there is flexibility as to when you can come, based on availability, but we are very flexible.

    Typical day

Your day will start around 6:30am when all feeding takes place. Then helping to give medicines, wound care, anything else the animals need on that particular day. Again, we are flexible.

Volunteers will also help with our pet food bank, educational school programs, and a number of programs we have in place. Each day is different, but we also promise rewarding fun! A meaningful experience awaits!

Preserving our sanctuary is about more than providing a refuge for animals—it’s about protecting a vital ecosystem. We are stewards of this land, committed to safeguarding its beauty and diversity for generations to come.
