    About the program

As an Animal Aware volunteer, you’ll be joining Guatemala’s first registered animal shelter, founded in 1998 and operating as a no-kill facility. Located just 30 minutes from Antigua in the town of Sumpango, the shelter is home to over 300 dogs and 30 cats, all rescued from abandonment, abuse, or injury.

Background to Animal Rescue in Guatemala
In Guatemala, cultural attitudes toward animals are still evolving. Dogs and cats are often seen as guard animals or pests rather than companions, which leads to widespread neglect, abandonment, and uncontrolled breeding. Sterilization rates remain very low, contributing to severe overpopulation. As a result, countless stray animals suffer from disease, hunger, and mistreatment.

Animal Aware was founded to address these issues. It runs spay/neuter campaigns, provides veterinary care to strays, and offers shelter and rehabilitation to animals in need. Every dog and cat put up for adoption is vaccinated, sterilized, and, if needed, rehabilitated until they are ready for a new home. For those who cannot be adopted, the shelter provides lifelong care.

    Volunteer Tasks
Your contribution as a volunteer makes a direct and visible difference in the lives of the animals. Tasks can include:

    • Walking and socializing dogs to improve their confidence and adoption chances

    • Feeding and providing enrichment for cats

    • Assisting with bathing, grooming, and basic obedience training

    • Helping with daily routines such as feeding and cleaning enclosures

    • Supporting adoption efforts with photography, videos, and social media content

    • Joining educational outreach activities in local schools when available

    • Assisting with spay/neuter campaigns and vaccination days when available

    • Helping with light maintenance and small construction projects at the shelter

No prior experience is required — just a love of animals and willingness to help. If you are a veterinary student or have relevant experience, you may also have the opportunity to assist with more advanced tasks.

    Volunteer Experience
You’ll stay with welcoming host families in Sumpango, enjoying authentic Guatemalan culture and meals (breakfast and dinner included). This homestay setup provides both comfort and immersion — an opportunity to experience daily life away from tourist centers. Volunteers often find their Spanish improves quickly, and for those who want to study formally, Antigua’s many Spanish schools are just a short bus ride away.

Afternoons and weekends are free, making it easy to explore Guatemala’s incredible diversity:

    • Visit Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its colonial charm and vibrant culture

    • Hike one of the country’s active volcanoes, such as Pacaya or Acatenango

    • Take trips to Lake Atitlán, Semuc Champey, or even the Pacific Coast

    • Explore Mayan history at sites like Iximché or Tikal (for longer stays)

    Why Join?

This project offers the chance to directly improve the lives of abandoned animals while experiencing Guatemala in a way that most tourists never do. You’ll become part of a long-standing organization that has pioneered animal welfare in the country, and your work will have a lasting impact on both the shelter and the wider community.

Whether you’re looking for hands-on animal care, cultural immersion, or simply the chance to give back, Animal Aware provides a safe, rewarding, and unforgettable volunteer experience.

Volunteering at Animal Aware usually takes place Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Volunteers contribute about 4 hours each day, with afternoons and weekends free to relax, explore, or take Spanish lessons in Antigua.

A typical day might look like this:

    • 7:30 am – Breakfast with your host family

    • 8:30 am – Arrive at the shelter and help with feeding and cleaning

    • 9:30 am – Walk dogs or play with cats, giving them attention and exercise

    • 11:00 am – Support additional tasks such as grooming, photography for adoptions, or small maintenance projects

    • 12:00 pm – Wrap up morning activities and share feedback with staff

    • 12:30 pm – Return to your host family for lunch and enjoy a free afternoon

Afternoons are often free, giving you time to rest, explore Sumpango or Antigua, or take Spanish classes at one of the many schools nearby. On weekends, volunteers have time off and often use this to visit Antigua, hike a volcano, or explore Guatemala’s natural wonders such as Lake Atitlán or Semuc Champey.

While daily tasks follow a routine, no two days are ever the same — you might be socializing puppies one day and helping prepare for a spay/neuter campaign the next. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own energy and creativity, making every day rewarding both for you and for the animals.

    What's Included

    What's Included

    On-site Services

Airport pickup, accommodation and food & drink are included in the fees.

Airport Pickup at La Aurora International Airport

Your airport pickup from La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City is included in the program fee.

A trusted local driver will meet you at the arrivals area and drive you directly to your homestay in Sumpango (about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic).

On your first day, the shelter manager will come to your homestay to welcome you, introduce you to your host family, and show you around the area, so you feel comfortable and know what to expect during your stay.

We recommend planning your arrival Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 18:00 so that your host family and the shelter staff can properly receive you.

    Accommodation

During your time at Animal Aware, you will stay with welcoming host families in Sumpango, a traditional Guatemalan town just 30 minutes from Antigua. All homestays are located within walking distance (15–20 minutes) of the shelter, making it easy to get to your volunteer placement each day.

    Rooms & Facilities
Volunteers are provided with either a private room or a shared room with another volunteer of the same gender (depending on availability and preference). Bathrooms with western-style toilets and hot showers are available in all homes. Families typically provide Wi-Fi access, and volunteers can do laundry either at home (by hand or with a washing machine, depending on the house) or at one of the local laundries in town.

Living with a family offers not only comfort and safety but also the opportunity for deep cultural immersion. You will practice your Spanish in daily life, join family routines, and gain a firsthand understanding of Guatemalan traditions. Families are warm, sociable, and eager to welcome international volunteers into their homes.

    Alternative Options
For volunteers who prefer not to do a homestay, there are also hostels and small hotels available in town or in nearby Antigua. These can be arranged upon request, usually at an extra cost, though meals are not included in those options.

Staying in a homestay in Sumpango provides the perfect balance between the authenticity of a small local community and the convenience of being close to Antigua, one of Guatemala’s most vibrant and popular cultural destinations.

    Food & Beverages

Volunteers staying in Sumpango are provided with breakfast and lunch as part of the program. Meals are typically simple, home-cooked dishes reflecting traditional Guatemalan cuisine, such as tortillas, beans, rice, vegetables, chicken or beef, and fresh fruit.

Depending on the accommodation setup, meals may be prepared by the host family or arranged within the local hosting network. Volunteers also have access to kitchen facilities in homes and may choose to prepare their own meals if preferred.

For lunch, volunteers have flexible options, including preparing food themselves or eating at one of the many affordable local restaurants and food stalls in Sumpango.

Clean drinking water is available in all homes.

If you choose to stay in a hostel or hotel instead of a homestay, meals are not included, but both Sumpango and nearby Antigua offer plenty of cafés, restaurants, and markets.
