    About the program

    Why This Project Matters

Early education shapes everything that follows, and consistent support during these first years has a lasting effect. Alongside the daily teaching, wayers has established new learning spaces equipped with playful and creative materials, added computer lessons, competitions, and excursions to the regular routine, and provided every child with a school backpack and shoes for their onward education.

Volunteers form an integral part of this work. You support the local staff in their daily routine and provide the children with the individual attention, encouragement, and playful learning that helps them develop both academically and personally.

Your Project: Social Work with Children in Sri Lanka

This project takes place in kindergartens, daycare centres, or schools, where you support local carers and teachers in their everyday work with children aged three to six. Your creativity and initiative are both welcome and needed: the children respond enthusiastically to crafting, group games, and simple English language exercises.

Social Work: You assist with the daily care of the children, taking part in games, crafts, singing, and painting, and providing the attention and encouragement that shapes their day. Your own ideas for activities are always appreciated.

Teaching: Through playful learning, you introduce the children to the alphabet, numbers, animal names, and other everyday vocabulary in English. Small materials such as coloured pencils, balloons, or soap bubbles are equally well received and put to immediate use.

A typical week might include: learning first English words through simple games and crafts on Monday, a creative session with the children on Tuesday, a game of football on Wednesday, a quiz reviewing the new vocabulary on Thursday, and rehearsing a flashmob together on Friday. Please note that tasks vary according to the season and that not every activity can be guaranteed.

Location: Your project takes place in and around Galle, on Sri Lanka's south coast. The daily transfer between the wayers Home and your placement is arranged by our team and included in your program.

Good to know: Sri Lanka observes school holidays as well. Schools and kindergartens are closed throughout December and partly during January and April. Please contact us and we will inform you which alternative projects are available during these periods. This project can also be recognised as a social internship.

    Typical day

Morning: After breakfast, our team's transfer takes you and the other volunteers to your project. There you help the local carers and teachers with the day: looking after the children, playing with them, and doing crafts, singing, and painting together.

A large part of the morning is spent on English. You practise the alphabet, numbers, animal names, and other simple words through games, songs, and small creative tasks. Since the children are between three and six years old, everything works best when it feels like play rather than a lesson.

No two mornings are quite the same. Sometimes you learn new words together through a simple game, sometimes crafting takes centre stage, and sometimes you head outside for a game of football. A quiz is a good way to see what has stuck, and rehearsing a flashmob together is a favourite with the children.

Your own ideas are welcome from the start, and every activity you bring along is put to good use. Please note that the daily routine changes with the season and with the needs of each kindergarten, daycare centre, or school, so not every activity can be guaranteed.

Midday: Around lunchtime, approximately at 12:00 pm, you'll return to the wayers Home, where a freshly prepared lunch is included. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Relax by the pool, head to the nearby beach, explore the charming streets of Galle, visit cafés and markets, go surfing, or discover more of Sri Lanka together with your fellow volunteers.

Evening: Dinner is shared together at the wayers Home, where the day's stories come together. How the evening continues is up to you: some enjoy a late swim in the pool, others head out to Galle for a drink, watch the sunset at the beach, or simply call it an early night.
