    About the program

    Why This Project Matters
The "Kick it" football project was founded in 2023 by former wayers volunteers and takes a holistic approach that combines sport with education. For the young players in Pwani Mchangani, training is more than a pastime: some of them train for major competitions, and football offers a genuine perspective for their own future and that of their families. The coaches and the children are always glad of volunteers who help shape the sessions.

    Your Project
You work under the guidance of Isack, an experienced local football coach, and take on a range of responsibilities: preparing and running training sessions, reviewing them afterwards so the players keep improving, helping to organise and lead the regular matches, and looking after the pitch and the sports equipment.

All volunteers follow our guidelines on appropriate conduct with children and young people.

Who You Will Be Working With
You work alongside Isack and the young players themselves. Our team on the east coast supports you throughout: Hithri as your contact for everything around your placement and the organisation of the training, Josephine as supervisor for all volunteer activities, and Benita as our volunteer coordinator in Tanzania.

You are never on your own: other wayers volunteers live with you at the wayers Home, exclusive to wayers participants, and share the island with you outside project hours.

    What We Expect From You
No coaching qualification is required. What matters is a passion for football, for youth development, and for education, plus the initiative to prepare your sessions and bring your own ideas. Pack enough sportswear, as you will be out on the pitch most afternoons.

Some things work differently on Zanzibar than at home, and plans can change at short notice. An open, patient attitude makes all the difference.

What You Can Expect From Us
Before you leave, we prepare you with an online seminar, access to the wayers Lounge, and the chance to connect with other participants. On arrival you receive a full introduction covering your project, the island, safety, and everyday practicalities.

During your stay you have contact persons at the project, personal support from our team on the island, and a 24 hour emergency line staffed in Germany and on Zanzibar. After your return you receive a certificate of participation.

    Life at the wayers Home
You live at the wayers Home in Pwani Mchangani, exclusive to wayers participants, together with volunteers from the other projects on the island. Most participants are between 18 and 25, and the shared house means friendships form across projects, often lasting well beyond the trip.

Surroundings: Pwani Mchangani is a small fishing village on the east coast with the longest uninterrupted white sand beach on the island, just one minute on foot from the house. Kiwengwa lies to the south, Matemwe to the north, and the livelier beaches of Kendwa and Nungwi further up the coast.

    Travel with Confidence
As a German tour operator with over 22 years of experience and more than 70,000 participants sent abroad, wayers supports you with visa guidance, insurance information, and a personal welcome on arrival, backed by a 24/7 emergency line in Germany and on the ground.

    Typical day

You are involved around four hours a day, Monday to Friday.

Morning: Your mornings are free. Head to the beach, take a swim before the heat sets in, or simply enjoy a slow start with the others in the house.

Midday: The middle of the day is your preparation time. Together with Isack and the other volunteers you plan the afternoon session: which drills to run, what the team needs to work on, and how to structure things so that every player gets something out of it.

Afternoon: Late afternoon takes you onto the pitch, where you run the session alongside the coach, guide the players through the drills, and support them as they practise. Afterwards the session is reviewed together, which is one of the reasons the training builds on itself from week to week. Back at the house at approximately 6:30 pm, dinner is shared with the others, and how the evening continues is up to you.

Evenings: Dinner is shared together at the wayers Home, where the day's stories come together. How the evening continues is up to you: some enjoy a late dip in the pool at the house, others head out to Paje for a drink, and others prefer an early night.

Regular matches are part of the routine too, and you help organise and lead them. Smaller tasks such as looking after the pitch and the equipment come up alongside.

    Free-time activities

Your project runs Monday to Friday, which leaves your afternoons and weekends free to make the most of the island.

Right on your doorstep. The beach is one minute on foot from the wayers Home, and the east coast has the longest uninterrupted white sand beach on Zanzibar. It is the perfect starting point for a long walk at hakuna matata pace, and with a bit of luck you might even spot a whale shark. If you are after something more active, grab a surfboard, go snorkelling, or head to the fish market for lunch. Back at the house, the pool and the garden are where most afternoons end up.

Exploring further. Together with your travel buddies from the wayers Home you can discover the rest of the island and the Tanzanian mainland. Kiwengwa lies to the south, Matemwe to the north, and the livelier beaches of Kendwa and Nungwi further up the coast. A day trip to Prison Island brings you face to face with giant tortoises, and Stone Town, the island's historic capital, is worth a visit for its old town, spice markets, and architecture.

Optional add-ons. If you want more, our extras slot neatly around your placement: the nine day Safari Tour through the Serengeti, Tarangire, and the Ngorongoro Crater, with an optional hike to the Kilimanjaro base camp, a week at the Surfcamp in Paje, or a PADI Open Water diving course.
