    About the program

Regenerative Tourism Supporter: Role Description (Lamjung, Nepal)

Location: Kaulepani Village, Besishahar, Lamjung, Nepal (Gateway to the Annapurna Circuit)

Focus: Creating a Net-Positive Impact on a Community Homestay Destination

Goal: To actively enhance the destination’s unique "Sense of Place" by strengthening its ecological, cultural, and social systems.

    The Regenerative Challenge in Kaulepani

Kaulepani is a renowned Community Homestay village, primarily inhabited by the Gurung and Newar communities, and is celebrated for its warm hospitality, panoramic Himalayan views, and historical sites. While the village has already achieved significant strides in sustainability (e.g., being recognized for environmentally friendly homestays, using clean cooking stoves, and managing waste), our project aims to move from this commendable "Do No Harm" foundation to a transformative "Do More Good" model.

The Regenerative Tourism Supporter will embed themselves within the community to identify and execute projects that actively restore and revitalize the local living system.

    Key Areas of Net-Positive Contribution

The volunteer's role is not a fixed job description but a dynamic, community-driven partnership focused on measurable enhancement across five key areas:

    1. Ecological Restoration and Resilience

Moving beyond the existing waste management, the volunteer will help enhance the village's natural capital and climate resilience, particularly along the trekking routes and community lands.

    • Potential Activities:

      • Initiate and support reforestation efforts using indigenous saplings, focusing on areas visible from the village or along hiking trails.

      • Develop and implement simple composting and water harvesting systems in homestay households or the community building to enhance self-sufficiency.

      • Conduct basic biodiversity surveys or educational workshops for the community on local medicinal herbs (like Chiraito and Satuwa) to promote conservation awareness.

    2. Cultural Vitality and Preservation

The role is critical in helping the Gurung and Newar communities preserve and celebrate their unique heritage in a way that is authentic and empowering, resisting commodification.

    • Potential Activities:

      • Assist the community’s Women’s/Mother’s Group (Sheer Khola) with documenting and revitalizing traditional practices (e.g., Ghatu, Kaura, Chutka dances, or local recipes) for intergenerational transfer.

      • Help create authentic, non-performative cultural exchange sessions that deepen the visitor's understanding of the community’s history (e.g., related to the Lamjung Durbar) and its "Sense of Place."

      • Share skills in storytelling or digital media to showcase the rich cultural identity online, attracting conscious visitors who value heritage.

    3. Community Empowerment and Skill Sharing

As a partner, the volunteer will focus on sharing specialized skills to help the community-led enterprises become more robust, resilient, and independent.

    • Potential Activities:

      • Provide training or mentorship in sustainable business planning, ethical marketing, or financial literacy for homestay operators and local micro-entrepreneurs.

      • Assist the Homestay Management Committee in developing new, low-volume/high-value, regenerative-focused tourist experiences (e.g., organic farming/agritourism workshops).

      • Facilitate workshops on improving digital communication and English language skills specifically tailored for hospitality and regenerative principles.

    4. Visitor Education and Stewardship

The supporter will act as a bridge between the regenerative vision of the village and the guests who arrive via the Annapurna Circuit gateway.

    • Potential Activities:

      • Co-design and install educational signage (in Nepali and English) that explains the village’s regenerative principles and what is expected of a "Regenerative Traveler."

      • Lead introductory briefings or short tours that highlight the community’s restoration projects, encouraging guests to sign a "Stewardship Pledge" to honor the place.

    The Regenerative Volunteer Mindset

This role demands a shift in thinking: you are not an expert imposing solutions, but a co-creator who works under the direction of the local community. Success is defined by the mutual benefit generated and the enhancement of the overall living system in Kaulepani, ensuring the future of this unique village is more vibrant, resilient, and authentic.

The regenerative and community-based homestay movement in rural Nepal represents a powerful paradigm shift in social impact. By prioritizing the holistic well-being of the destination—its culture, environment, and people—over mere economic transaction, this model generates profound, multi-dimensional social benefits.

The impact is not just about bringing in external resources; it is about activating and valuing internal resources—the local culture, the environment, and the entrepreneurial spirit of its people, especially its women. This form of tourism fosters a cycle of regeneration, where economic security reinforces cultural pride, which in turn empowers marginalized groups, strengthening social cohesion and creating a more just, resilient, and inclusive community for the long term. This successful case study highlights that true social impact in tourism is achieved when communities are placed at the center of planning, management, and benefit-sharing, truly leaving the destination in a better state than before.
