About The Placement

Support local small-scale farmers from nearby towns and villages as they tend their family plots. You’ll learn to grow local produce and manage the land using traditional, hands-on methods while helping farmers provide for their families.

This placement is particularly focused on assisting elderly farmers or those with mobility or health issues, who often struggle to keep up with the demands of cultivating their land without extra help. Your support allows them to maintain their livelihoods and pass on their skills to the next generation.

Why This Placement Matters

For longer-term volunteers, there are opportunities to research and trial organic practices, higher-value crops such as pineapples and watermelons, and other methods that can boost income and food security.

Working alongside our conservation projects, we’re also developing upcycled plastic greenhouses for farmers and community plots, demonstrating low-cost ways to enhance production and protect crops from the changing climate.

• Shared volunteer accommodation in a modern house in semi-rural Kwahu with views of surrounding forests. Utilities such as electricity, running water, and kitchen facilities are provided.

Your contribution directly sustains this support structure, enabling us to employ local staff and ensure volunteers have safe, comfortable living conditions.

Getting to Your Placement

Volunteers generally use shared taxis to travel to their placement, which are readily available and affordable. Our team will guide you on routes, group transport, and local tips. After school, volunteers can easily reach town to shop, meet friends, or explore the area.

Your Role

Depending on the season and the farmer you’re paired with, you may:

• Weed and maintain fields.

• Fetch water from nearby streams for irrigation.

• Plant seeds and transplant seedlings.

• Harvest crops when ready.

Because many of the farmers we support are elderly or have mobility issues, your help may include heavier tasks they can no longer manage themselves, as well as setting up community or school vegetable gardens to support food security.

Longer-term volunteers can also research and recommend new crops, techniques or greenhouse ideas to help farmers develop their businesses.

Who You'll Be Working With

You’ll work directly with one of our linked farmers — often elderly or mobility-limited — each a small-scale grower supporting their family through traditional agriculture.

A member of our volunteer support team will visit you periodically after your initial introduction to ensure you’re settled and making an impact.

Volunteer Expectations

This placement involves hands-on work in the heat and humidity, so bring your enthusiasm and willingness to get stuck in. No farming experience is required; we’ll match your abilities and interests during your orientation.

We expect volunteers to attend placements Monday to Friday (with occasional flexibility for travel). This consistency helps the farmers plan their work and benefit fully from your help.

We’re on hand any time to support you — whether you’d like help adjusting your timetable, trying another project, or planning weekend travel. Our local team at the volunteer house will also share insights on the area and Ghanaian life so you soon feel at home.

What to Bring

Bring at least one strong pair of shoes and full-length trousers or tracksuit bottoms for farm work, especially at sites further into the forest. Fundraising for seedlings or basic farm tools before arrival is a great way to hit the ground running and make a lasting impact.

During School Holidays

School holidays do not affect the farmer support placement — you’ll still be able to continue as normal with fieldwork and community gardens.
