In this volunteer program you support AIDS affected children or children living in poverty in a dayschool. This commitment to these children is important because children affected by AIDS are often excluded from society. This day school offers these children a place where they feel comfortable and receive a very good, bilingual education. The children are taught by the highest quality of teachers available and follow a Canadian curriculum in English as well as a Honduran curriculum for Spanish. All students will be actively involved in recycling projects, community projects and animal welfare projects. Many of the students come from impoverished, and often very stressful backgrounds so the school addresses that in many ways. The dayschool offers free breakfast and lunch program that all students are given every day. As the dayschool ist providing the meals for the students they will be taught nutrition and the school will be junk food free.
The aim of the project is to create more equal opportunities and to create exchange and overcome cultural and language barriers. This project in social work is very versatile.
In this program you will work with local people (for example honduran teachers) and international volunteers. Working with Hondurans will give you a deeper insight into their culture and their way of working. The intercultural knowledge exchange enriches the Honduran teachers in the institution on the one hand and you as a volunteer on the other hand. The official language on Roatan is Spanish. However, all children are taught bilingually and therefore speak Spanish and English. In order to make a valuable contribution to the program, you will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in English and/or Spanish.
We expect our volunteers to show interest in Honduran culture, contribute their own ideas, and show empathy for Honduran children. On the Caribbean island of Roatan, the clock ticks a little slower - so it is an advantage if you can patiently adapt to the new culture and way of life. You do not need to bring your own equipment.
To help you settle in quickly on Roatan, you will receive all the important information at the beginning of your stay. We will accompany you the first days and introduce you to your new colleagues. In case of questions or uncertainties you will always have a contact person.
Participation in this project can also be credited as a (compulsory) internship.
