    About the program

Did you know that 262,000 tonnes of food are wasted annually in Catalonia? Food waste occurs across the food industry, with 40% wasted in production, 5% in distribution, 40% in homes, and 15% in the restaurant sector. This is where you can make a difference!

By helping these initiatives, you can give surplus food a new purpose and ensure it reaches those in need. A network of centers collects excess food from local restaurants, supermarkets, and cafes, organizes it, and redistributes it among families, the elderly, and the unhoused.

    What to Expect:

    • Food Collection: Collect perishable food from supermarkets and donations.

    • Meal Preparation: Prepare breakfast, lunch, or dinner and serve meals to unhoused people.

    • Warehouse Work: Assist with loading, unloading, organizing, and quality control of food donations.

    • Food Processing: Treat food for freezing and future cooking.

    • Special Recipes: Cook special recipes to maximize the potential of each food item and create quality meals for distribution.

    Daily Tasks:

    • Food Collection: Pick up food from restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets.

    • Meal Preparation: Prepare and serve meals.

    • Storage Organization: Assist with storing and organizing food donations.

    • Quality Control: Perform quality checks on collected food.

    • Meal Distribution: Hand out meal boxes to families, the elderly, and the unhoused community.

    Why Join?:

    • Make an Impact: Help reduce food waste and support those in need.

    • Gain Experience: Develop skills in food distribution and community service.

    • Cultural Immersion: Experience life in Barcelona while making a positive difference.

    Accommodation

You will be accommodated in a social hostel with a meaningful social mission in Barcelona. The Hostel has the capacity to accommodate up to 320 conscious travelers who want to visit Barcelona in a responsible way. There are various common areas such as the dining room, the living room, room balconies, and outside areas.

The hostel is in a neighborhood where you can find everything you need: a mall, local coffee shops, supermarkets, ATMs, a hospital, police, and most utilities you will need are just around the corner. The Hostel is 10 minutes walking from the metro stop and has many buses that can bring you to the city center in 1 hour.

But what is really unique about it is its social concept. The hostel is actually a social business for a non-profit organization run in the same building. The non-profit develops a wide range of programs, campaigns, and activities for children and youth, their families, and third sector organizations.

    Food & Beverages

We will provide breakfast and dinner at the hostel everyday. The hostel restaurant offers meals with fresh local ingredients everyday for all volunteers in a very Spanish style and they are prepared to accommodate most diet restrictions such as vegan and vegetarians, gluten-free and lactose intolerant.
