    About the program

Our football coaching program in Ghana's capital city, Accra, is the perfect programme for those looking to combine their football and social skills! Not only will you be teaching discipline and new skills to your teams, but you’ll also be helping to recruit new players and helping local children build a brighter future for themselves. If you have a passion for football that you want to use to contribute around the world, then this is the programme for you.

Football is a national sport in Ghana, and the national team plays at the World Cup level. Enthusiasm for the sport runs high, and it is genuinely played everywhere - at school, at local clubs, out on the street! As well as the obvious health benefits such as increasing physical fitness, the sport also promotes positive social skills and teamwork within the community.

Volunteering as a coach in Ghana would enable you to pass on valuable skills to the younger generations and become part of an amazing community.

Volunteers are based in Accra, working at the local football club which was founded in 1998. The club has evolved over the years and has teams across several tiers. They have had a very successful evolution, growing from an amateur team to a progressional football club. Their main goal now is to reach the main national league. The club is home to both a junior and senior team, who train on different fields around ten minutes apart. From our shared volunteer house or your host family, you can easily reach the training ground by public transport or taxi.

    Typical day

As a volunteer, you'll assist the coaches on site. This could include training the players in groups according to their skill level, leading warm-up exercises, working on strength and endurance techniques and guiding your players through specific exercises designed to improve their match techniques. ..

    Typical day

As a volunteer, you'll assist the coaches on site. This could include training the players in groups according to their skill level, leading warm-up exercises, working on strength and endurance techniques and guiding your players through specific exercises designed to improve their match techniques. If you volunteer during low season, you will also be responsible for recruiting new talent. The club puts on dedicated training days in order to find the best local talent, so you'll be able to offer an important amount of support for these.

Typically, you will work for three to five hours a day, five days a week. Matches are usually held on the weekend so you may, at times, have to work a weekend and swap your days off for ones in the week. The teams practice every day except match day, and you’ll usually have the day off after an important game. The senior team trains in the morning and juniors train in the afternoon. During the off-season when there are no league games, you’ll spend your time recruiting for the club.

    Free-time activities

Ghana says "Akwaaba!" – welcome! This vibrant and diverse country, rich in culture and natural beauty, will draw you in from the moment you arrive. The Ghanaian way of life, shaped by warm hospitality and openness, makes it easy for newcomers to feel at home and quickly settle into their surroundings.

After your volunteer work and on your free days, you'll have plenty of opportunities to relax, explore, and experience Ghana’s unique charm. The capital city, Accra, is a fascinating blend of old and new. You’ll find sleek high-rises and modern shopping streets just steps away from traditional fishing communities and centuries-old forts. Take time to explore the city.

Just along the coast stands Christiansborg Castle, also known as Osu Castle. Once the seat of Ghana’s government, this historic fortress is one of many built during the colonial era, when the region was a hub for trade in gold, ivory, and slaves. Today, it's recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a powerful reminder of Ghana’s past.

For culture lovers, Accra offers plenty to discover. The newly renovated National Museum, as well as cultural centers like Alliance Française and Brazil House, regularly host performances, exhibitions, and events that give insight into Ghana’s artistic and historical heritage.

When you need a break from the city's hustle and bustle, nearby beaches offer the perfect escape. Spend your days lounging under palm trees on golden sands, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife that lights up the coast after sunset.

Beyond Accra, Ghana has much more to explore. One of the country’s natural highlights is Kakum National Park. Here, you can walk along a unique canopy walkway suspended high above the forest floor – a rare opportunity to experience the rainforest from a bird’s-eye view and witness its untouched beauty from up to 45 meters above ground.

The city is full of contrasts – modern shopping malls sit beside open-air markets, and luxury apartment blocks rise near historic colonial buildings. Exploring Accra on foot is one of the best ways to truly experience its atmosphere. As you wander, you’ll see traditional fishermen casting nets from wooden boats, and modern government buildings housed in colonial-era forts.

Though the heat and traffic may be intense at times, Accra’s spirit is infectious. The food scene is flavorful and varied, and the nightlife is buzzing with music, dancing, and community. No matter where you find yourself – in the city center, the west, or along the coast – there’s always something to experience.

So gather your fellow volunteers and dive into your Ghanaian adventure. There's a whole new world waiting for you to discover it!
