About the Veterinary Internship Program
The veterinary program is designed for veterinary students who want to gain insight into clinical work in a high-volume, resource-limited environment.
Interns primarily assist and observe in the daily work of the veterinary clinic. Tasks may include supporting consultations, assisting during surgeries, helping with inpatient care, monitoring animals, preparing materials, maintaining hygiene standards, and supporting general clinic organisation.
Depending on experience and demonstrated ability, responsibilities may gradually increase under the supervision of the veterinary team. However, all work is closely guided, and patient welfare always comes first.
At Mbwa Wa Africa, every animal is treated with the same level of care, regardless of whether it is a privately owned pet, a community dog, or a stray animal. The clinic was established not only to support the shelter financially but also to provide veterinary care to animals that would otherwise have no access to treatment.
Working and Living Environment
The project is located in a rural area near Arusha in northern Tanzania, surrounded by nature with views of Mount Meru. Interns live on-site at The Gongo Centre in shared volunteer accommodation.
The clinic operates in a busy and dynamic environment. Work can be intense, unpredictable, and emotionally challenging, with a wide variety of cases ranging from routine treatments to emergencies. Veterinary standards and resources differ from those in many Western countries, so adaptability and problem-solving are essential.
Team and Collaboration
Interns work closely with the local veterinary team, led by veterinarian Dr. Anna Charles Ng’washi, veterinary assistants, and clinic staff. They are also supported by volunteer coordinators Jaqueline and Vivian, as well as the wider shelter team and international volunteers.
Collaboration with the local team is a key part of the experience, and interns are expected to follow guidance.
Expectations and Requirements
We only accept volunteers with a medical background for the veterinary clinic. All other volunteers are primarily based in the shelter and may assist in the clinic only when additional help is required.
Interns are expected to be motivated, responsible, and willing to learn. It is important to understand that this is not a setting for unsupervised practice. Even though many animals are strays or community animals, every life is valued, and all treatments are carried out professionally and ethically.
Working in this environment requires flexibility, resilience, and the ability to adapt to limited resources and different clinical standards. Creative problem-solving is often part of daily work.
