    About the program

During the six weeks, you will travel to Discover  Iceland! Starting at Krýsuvík. Afterward, you will head to BRÚ. Finally, visit the charming town of Siglufjörður

    BRÚ

    • Work

The main activity is Beach Cleaning. Beyond the sheer tonnage of trash removed, and probably more importantly, we feel that cleanups are the gateway for volunteers and people from all walks of life to become aware of the issue and feel empowered to take action in their way. Some days, when the weather conditions are not suitable, we will focus on renovation work; painting or fixing things around and inside the house.

    • Location

Keep in mind that is a 1-hour drive to the closest city (Borganes). Based just off the main road, we are not set in a town, therefore the only way to get around is by car. Brú's stunning surrounding countryside offers the perfect tonic to relax and leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Around the house, you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, waterfalls, rivers, canyons, and craters. The purpose of the center is to protect nature in the area and to raise awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors who are coming to the area.

    • Accommodation

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends in Brú. The house is approximately 500 m² and has 12 double rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, common areas, workshop rooms, and galleries. House capacity 24

    Siglufjörður

    • Work

Our main activity is Forestry working with the Icelandic Forestry Association. Working closely with the local associations our tasks will depend on the needs of the local community and the season.

    • Location

Siglufjörður is along with the community of Ólafsfjörður a part of The Municipality of Fjallabyggð, which came into being when the two communities were merged in 2006.

The closeness to nature is always within reach, whether you wish to go on a hike, play golf, try ocean swimming or go skiing. The birdlife is varied, with some 2,000 birds of 16 to 18 species usually found in the fjord, particularly in summer.

    • Accommodation

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house is approximately 300 m² and has 2 big dormitory rooms for 8 people each, 2 double rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 15.

    Krýsuvík

    • Work

The project aims to develop Local, Organic, and Sustainable Agriculture. The main work of this camp will be to take care of the land, in various ways. Working closely with the local associations our tasks will depend on the season.

    • Location

Close by is the lake Kleifarvatn. It is the largest lake of the Reykjanes Peninsula (8 km²) and one of Iceland’s deepest lakes (97 m). There is no river feeding its water, all of it comes and goes from underground.

The landscapes surrounding are astonishing. Walking around the park is a very special experience. There are boiling springs, mud bubbles, and hissing steam is forced out of the earth from geothermal vents.

Kleifarvatn is popular for hiking, fishing, or watching birds. Surrounding it is a trail to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful and ever-changing colors of the landscape.

    • Accommodation

Participants will be staying at the Worldwide Friends house. The house is approximately 600 m² and has 10 rooms for 3 to 4 people each. A fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 30.

    Workshops

Workshops will take place in the late afternoon. Our main focus during the project will be on Global Warming and how to prevent it. Throughout a series of different workshops, the goal is to improve the environmental education and consciousness of the projects’ participants. Take part in this promising project and spring into action against climate change!

    Participants Age

We host international volunteers, and most of our participants are between 18 to 25, however, we don't have a maximum age limit.

    Camp leaders

There is always one or more leaders for each camp, depending on the size of the group. Leaders represent the link between the hosting community and the group of volunteers. They coordinate the work, organize leisurely activities, plan excursions, and organize the shopping, house chores, and cooking sessions. Apart from these additional responsibilities, they are equal to other volunteers. Most of our camp leaders are from other countries, as we are very open-minded in hosting international leaders from other organizations

    WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, and even icebergs;

We will focus on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening a volunteer from a different country will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, or theatrical – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers. There will be cultural dinners where volunteers prepare typical dishes from their country and share it with the groups. Bring any traditional ingredients that you want to share.
