    About the program

Sayariy’s Community Library Education Program supports children and young people in communities where access to books, safe learning spaces, and creative education opportunities is limited. Many families in these areas face economic challenges that restrict educational resources outside the formal school system. Our libraries aim to create safe, inspiring environments where children can discover reading, creativity, and confidence.

The program focuses on strengthening literacy, creativity, and emotional development through community libraries that function as learning and cultural spaces. Volunteers help facilitate reading sessions, storytelling activities, creative workshops, educational games, and art-based activities that encourage curiosity and participation.

Volunteers work alongside local coordinators and community leaders who guide the educational approach and ensure that activities respond to the needs of the children. The focus is not formal teaching but creating supportive environments where learning can happen through play, imagination, and interaction.

The libraries are located within community spaces where children gather after school and during vacation periods. These spaces provide a welcoming atmosphere where children can read, learn, and express themselves freely.

Volunteers are expected to bring enthusiasm, patience, creativity, and a genuine interest in working with children. Experience in education is helpful but not required. Volunteers should be open-minded, respectful of local culture, and willing to participate actively in daily activities.

In return, volunteers experience meaningful cultural exchange, the opportunity to support educational access, and the chance to contribute to a community initiative that empowers children through books, creativity, and learning.

    Typical day

Most volunteers live with local host families in the community, allowing for an authentic cultural immersion experience. Each day begins with a 25 to 35-minute walk from the host home to the community library, passing through neighborhoods in the desert landscape of northern Peru, surrounded by arid mountains.

Upon arrival at the library, the children are already waiting enthusiastically to begin the day’s activities. Community women leaders welcome the volunteers, provide guidance, and offer support in organizing the activities so the day can start with confidence.

The work is carried out in two shifts:

    Morning shift: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
    Afternoon shift: 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

During these hours, educational and recreational workshops are held for different age groups ranging from 5 to 12 years old. Each group participates in one hour of activities, allowing for more personalized and dynamic interaction.

Activities include reading aloud, reading comprehension support, educational games, crafts, art, group dynamics, and creative exercises that encourage imagination and learning. Workshops are adapted to the children’s ages and the community context, prioritizing a playful and participatory approach.

The work is collaborative, carried out alongside a Peruvian colleague or a Latin American volunteer, promoting cultural exchange, teamwork, and a supportive environment. At the end of each shift, the space is organized and the next day’s activities are coordinated with the local team.

Every day is different, but they all share the same purpose: to create a safe, educational, and joyful space where children can learn, express themselves, and dream of new opportunities.

    Free-time activities

During their free time, volunteers can enjoy the rich cultural, historical, and natural life that Trujillo and its surroundings offer. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” Trujillo blends pre-Hispanic history, living traditions, and coastal desert landscapes.

Volunteers can visit impressive archaeological sites such as Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the world, and the Huaca del Sol y la Luna, heritage of the ancient Moche culture. Local museums, historic plazas, and traditional markets also provide opportunities to explore the region’s identity and history.

A short distance away are the beaches of Huanchaco, famous for their traditional caballitos de totora. There, volunteers can relax by the ocean, walk along the boardwalk, enjoy local gastronomy, or even try surfing.

For those seeking quieter moments, free time can be spent sharing with the host family, practicing Spanish, participating in community activities, or simply resting and embracing the local rhythm of life.

Free time offers an excellent opportunity for cultural exchange, relaxation, and exploration, enriching the volunteer experience with meaningful moments of learning and personal connection.
