Join the Mission to Protect Endangered Sea Turtles in Costa Rica
The Planet Conservation Sea Turtle Conservation Project is dedicated to safeguarding four iconic sea turtle species— Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), Green (Chelonia mydas), and Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea)—all of which are classified as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Our mission is to reduce the vulnerability of these remarkable marine reptiles by protecting vital nesting populations, collecting crucial scientific data, and promoting sustainable conservation practices. Our work spans both the South Caribbean coast—particularly the beaches of Cahuita and Playa Gandoca —from March to October, and the Pacific coast from June to December.
We're looking on passionate volunteers to join our efforts. From participating in night and morning patrols to supporting the collection of the eggs as well as hatchling releases and data collection, your involvement directly contributes to the survival of these ancient ocean travelers as otherwise in some places 99% of the nests will be stolen by poachers.
Our volunteers always walk with a local guide and follow the patrol protocol on walking in line, without light and mostly in silent to be aware of any events. We also need to ensure that the volunteer is physically fit to walk 12km per patrol and can adjust to the tropical climate as well as changing working times. You live in the jungle and can often spot monkeys, sloths, toucans and other tropical birds. Our local team is also there for the volunteers to organize additional activities such as Spanish language or surf courses, excursions or tours.
